I had a unique oppurtunity at work today.

Gotta be a Peregrine, and a picture perfect specimen at that. I'd get into falconry if I didn't have to spend 50,000 dollars on a license to get involved....

that is pretty cool.i would like to see her do her job in person.i have watched on television several times but never in real life.

Nice shots. Its a Peregrine Falcon, right?
I love birds of prey, especialy these. Awesome birds, the way they hunt is just incredible.

I was going to say the same thing. Peregrine Falcons are amazing animals. They can reach speeds of over 200mph in a dive to attack. Don't want to get in that thing's way!!!! Talk about a hunter!

Very cool!

Birds of prey have always fascinated me. I live and work in a rual environment and have seen several hawks carrying mice, snakes, etc.

Coolest one I ever witnessed was just as I was approching a tree along side of the road a flock of blackbirds flew out of the tree. Just as they did a hawk swooped down and caught one in mid-air and flew off with it. 5 or 6 birds out of the flock flew along swooping down on him trying to get him to drop their buddy.

Funny one was a guy in town raises pigeons. He was telling me about a high dollar pigeon he had that every time he let him out he would fly straight up in the air, do a flip and then fly off in another direction.

He is in my office one day and he is very upset. When asked what was wrong he said he let his pigeon out, he flew straight up, did his flip and then a hawk swooped in and flew off with him, LOL.

I'm thinking I really don't care about a flipping pigeon but I would have loved to see the hawk swoop in and fly off with it :D

Mature , healthy peregrines usually look much blacker than that one, so i would say immature peregrine falcon...but the facial colourings suggest it is a prairie falcon.. I am betting on my first guess though.

Great post!

Thank you for taking the time to share.

what an amazing bird.

I live in the northeast., there are a ton of large predatory birds here which surprised me. Alot of these birds can be seen flying around major highways feeding on road kill. They perch on the light posts or exit signs. I have seen multiple large birds including a few vultures, which are really large & ugly beasts, along the breakdown lanes of I95.

I was hoping that you would break these pics out into its own post so we could talk about them!

So was I. That had to be a really cool opportunity. I got to hold one once at the nature center here and was just amazed in looking at her and watching her movements. Being a handler has to be a cool job. I would think she occasionally be unable to resist going after one of the rabbits munching on the freshly cut grass around the air port. I know I used to love to walk the back roads around the Tampa airport hunting rabbits with my air rifle years ago.
