This may not help some of you out there but for those just getting started this will work. The other night I am in the shower and (OK get those minds out of the gutter) I saw my wife's throw away shaver she uses for her legs. When I picked it up to move it I realized the handle was rubbery and easy to grip. I told her when that one got dull not to throw it away I wanted it.
First let me say I never throw anything away I am terrible Pack Rat. So I got one of the old magnets I have around my shop, salvaged from an old stereo speaker, cut the blade from the razor handle and lightly touched the end to my belt sander to get the proper angle. I then mixed up some two part epoxy, Loctite 11C Hysol and epozied the handle to the magnet. Here is the result. Sorry the pics are bad but you get the idea and there was a lighting storm going on outside so outside pics weren't an option.
It works great for holding a knife blank flat on a grinder. I actually grip close to the magnet for stability but the handle works in my hand easilly to hang onto it. Any way thought I would pass on this idea.
I already have dibbs on the next dull razor handle. Two will work twice as good I belive.
I have been making some knives from and old Two man saw and the first was hard to hold against the belt sander to polish. I either grind off the fingers or it got so hot it was impossible to hang on to. This way I have easy grip and just have to remeber to cool often! This was the first one I cut from the saw.
I think it turned out well. It has a poured Pewter bolster, and Red Oak handles with brass pins.
I hope this idea helps somene besides me out there!
