I had forgotten how much I liked the outdoors.

Grew up in the woods. Holding a gun and hunting from the time I could walk.
Family owns about 400 acres in Claiborne Parish Louisiana, so I had that at my disposal every weekend. As I grew older, I got away from hunting, and a lot of the outdoors. I still shoot a lot, 3-gun matches and what not, but dont get out on our land much at all anymore.

Last weekend a good friend asked if I wanted to go up around Hamburg Arkansas to his hunting camp just to hang out for the weekend, do some crow hunting and predator calling like we used to when we were kids. I didnt have anything going on locally, so I decided to go.
They have a real rustic hunting camp. Basically just a roof over your head. No heat, no lights, no running water. There is a shower, but its supplied by big tanks that collect rainwater, and if anyone in that area remembers, it was 25deg last weekend, so a shower was COLD.
Still, i had a blast. We got to do some crow hunting, forgot how much I missed that sport. Went out one morning and gathered up some firewood for the big woodburning heater in the middle of the camp. Seasoned up some steaks, cooked them, some potatos, and deer sausage. Basically, lived on a diet of that, Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme pies, and Miller Genuine Draft.
I got to try out a few Tomahawks I had modded, and while walking around the woods around the camp area, I came across a SWEET piece of Lighter knot. Im not sure what everyone calls it, but its whats left when a pine tree dies and rots. Makes for AMAZING kindling for a fire, and smells great.
The chunk I found was a stump, hard as a rock. I pulled out out with my 4-wheeler. it was about 5ft long, and was perfectly ripe. For those that know that im talking about, this stuff is like gold to those in the know.

It was so nice to get away from the TV,the internet, and my cell phone, no cell phone signal there, so no worry about that. Just so relaxing to get back to what I enjoyed when I was a kid.About the only think I missed was my GF and out little girl.
If you havent been to the woods in a while, I highly suggest you take the time and spend a few days in the country. Chop some wood, make a fire with just your firesteel. Cook some food over a grill, have some ale, and just enjoy some simple time.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I need to get back out as soon as the temperature rises above 20 degrees.

Here are some pictures. Sorry about the quality. My dig camera died, and these are from my cell phone.

Old wood buring stove. Only source of heat in the joint.

There is a toilet. No running water. Take a 5gal bucket, and fill the tank up to flush:D Hot water heater broke about 40 years ago.

Backside of the camp. Good spot for sitting and waiting on food to cook while you get drunk. Deer skinning frame in the background.

Kitchen. You tie the food up on a line so the rats wont plunder it while you sleep.

The front of the camp. Built back in the 1940s. You could fool someone into thinking the 1840s.

Hey! What were you guys doing in my house?! LOL! What you call 'lighter wood' is sold as 'Fatwood', and folks like LL Bean & Orvis resell it for big money to fireplace yuppies. I've found plenty of great Lighter stumps over the years, always a joy to have one in camp.

I know what you mean and spend 2-3 days a week in the woods because Winter nights are the clearest for the stars.

Great pics, and looks like a great spot for getting away...thanks. Gene

Man, that makes me wish spring was here already. My folks go deer hunting ever year and stay in an old school house converted to a camp. It has a gas range and a few amenities but it pretty rough. I'd like to do that sometime with them; I haven't been deer hunting in over 15 years!

I wont lie. The internet is one of my vices. So much info out there for my hobbies.

However, if I could snap my fingers, and all the cell phones, and internet would totally disapper from the face of the earth, from EVERYONE. Id do it in a second.

NFB,

Yep, the internet is pretty great, but I'm never more settled than when I'm outside working, hiking, fishing, etc. I'm always know where I belong...
