I had my Nirvana reground...

Now THAT , my friend, is a KNIFE !

I'm going to give up porn sites and just follow you around. Wait . . . that didn't come out right . . .
anyway that knife is right out of my dreams and into reality. Personally I like the heck out of the grit blasted finish. A blade that rusts . . . it has been so long . . . sounds like heaven . . . all I have are these super flood resistant stainless steels. A little rust here and there sounds refreshing. So dry here where I live that if you put on hand lotion out side it dries up and blows away before you can spread it around so maybe I am not in the most general clime.

Like, like, like that sculpted Ti handled cutter !

1000% better than the original blade.

Josh has 2 of my knives now. I should have them in a couple days.

Seems to highlight the pattern in the handle better too. Does it do that in person?

Where exactly is the balance point on this knife when it is open? I'm thinking of having it reground although trying to find a maker to an M390 FFG would be a dream. Any regrets?

This is the way Spyderco had to release this knife - not the absurd saber grind it has...

That's definitely what the Nirvana should have been from the factory. Stunning! Josh does awesome work.

I'm tempted to go even further with this one (any kind of warranty obviously void now) and have the handle custom anodized. Anyone have ideas?
Suggestion: Make the criss-crossing lines on the handle deeper and wider, then take a blowtorch to the titanium (one of those hobby butane cans will do). You'll get a lot of colors - think rainbow colored. Then mildly sand down the finish until you only have the multi-colored spectrum in the grooves in the titanium.

I did this recently to a badge. Ill dig out a pic, when I have the time.

Yep, need this done to mine. The warranty is kind of pointless to begin with, by the time you have lock issues they won't have spare frames to replace it with so it's not like it really matters.

Agreed.

Balance point is now exactly at the concave point on the handle. Feels absolutely perfect to me and I can't overstate how much of an unexpected improvement it has been.

I was actually thinking about having something similar done; i.e. fade anodizing and then have the handle sanded to a satin finish, leaving only the lines with the fade anodizing. Widening the lines doesn't really seem feasible, at least financially, since I'm not going to do it myself the cost would likely be high.

Handled a Nirvana today at a local knife shop. It was pre-sold so I didn't want to mess with it to much (and neither did the store manager) but it was super nice!! The price was a little steep for a Spyderco IMHO but def. a keeper.

Big thanks to Razor Edge Knives. My Nirvana no longer feels super blade heavy and unbalanced. Slices absurdly well now. Additionally, I'm hoping the satin finish will be less corrosion prone since the old finish had already started developing rust spots.

I'm tempted to go even further with this one (any kind of warranty obviously void now) and have the handle custom anodized. Anyone have ideas? My only concern is the stop pin since that can't be removed. Will that be an issue for anodizing?

I struggled to take this picture because the blade is now so shiny my camera won't pick up anything else.

Very nice. I like the satin finish a lot. However , I'd prefer to keep the saber grind. FFG is great but I have many knives with that grind already. I think the saber grind on the stock Nirvana looks awesome. But I do prefer your satin finish over the bead blasted finish.

Looks aight. I do love that FFG. I'd like to see exactly how thin it is though.

I was wondering though; and this is not an adversarial question; is the weight and grind of the blade really that bad to need the thinning? And, if so; I'm wondering why the blade wasn't designed like that to begin with. I know you can't answer the second part, that was me just trying to figure it out maybe.

The reason for my concern is that my wife gave me a choice for my birthday, a nirvana or a strider. I was seriously considering the nirvana, based on blade design and shape alone. But after this thread, and seeing how many think your mods are so much better for the knife, I'm not so sure anymore.

The blade weight is not really an issue, in original form it balances quite well by the index finger. However, on mine at least a sharp and dramatic wrist flick can get the blade to come out, not because the detent is weak by any means, but because the blade has a lot of mass to it.

As for the grind, if you are a fan of Spyderco specifically, it really needs thinning out. Spyderco has always been known for supremely functional designs, which are usually thinly ground. This is not the case; I would say it's thicker behind the edge than most ZT's, and the very low flat grind makes it very wedge-y.

Why wasn't it designed like this to begin with? IMO, this knife feels more like a Peter Rassenti production piece than a Spyderco/Rassenti collaboration. It is basically a 1-to-1 replica of the Nirvana, and Spyderco didn't change much about it including its cool, but not very Spyderco-like grind. The saber grind looks really cool, which is what people want on a custom.

In regards to the Strider vs Nirvana, I would say the Nirvana will probably have better fit and finish (they'll both probably have some lock stick at first) whereas the Strider (as long as it's an SnG and FFG) will cut better and be more ergonomic. The Nirvana will also probably feel like you're getting more for the money.
