I hate choils.

Used to love them, i even modded a few knives making a choil or increasing the size of an existing choil.
However i've been using moras a lot lately and i've realized i don't see the need for a choil.
Aesthetically speaking choils look cool but are less utilitarian.
Of course thats just my opinion/preference... to each his own.
:)

The worst choil I've had the (dis)pleasure of using is on the Caly 3. Such a sad design -- deep and rough enough jimping/grooving to be painful to the finger, and yet the curve is shallow enough that with an absent-minded wiggle, your finger is on the blade. The worse of both worlds, unfortunately.

I agree. The forefinger is way too close to the blade; it just takes one unlucky slip and you'll get cut to the bone (knock on wood).
It's awkward to not use the choil with this knife, unfortunately.
Otherwise the Caly3 is an amazing knife.

I agree, as well. The UKPK had one of the most useful choils, ever. It made it ergonomic, added a safety factor to the non-locking knife, and aided in closing.

The Caly3, while a success on many other levels, failed to reincarnate this feature effectively. The jimping doesn't succeed in making up for the shallow choil.

In general, I like choils, provided that they are big enough to actually place the forefinger in. The best examples are the *UKPK* and MiniManix.

Hate 'em. I think a knife should be well sharp all along the edge.

Heres a thought if you need to get your hand close to the edge for some kind of cutting , well sharpen the blade right to the handle .

Love 'em. All the knives I use regularly have choils, something I must have picked subconsciously, because I never really thought about whether a choil improves a knife before.

Let's see, my "users" are the Kiwi, Stretch, full size Persian, Calypso Jr., Native, Atlantic Salt, Caly 3, and Jester. All but one have a choil, so I guess I'm firmly in the pro-choil camp. :D
