especially when they are hanging around my shop,I've had this thing by the corner of my shop for a while now, anyone what kind it is,at least it's outside otherwise there wouldn't be enough left to take a picture off.

It's a Golden Orb Weaver. Unless you just can't stand it, leave him; he helps keep the bug population down.

I had one for several years out back between the frame of my screened in patio and my HVAC unit. I named him Boris (after the song by The Who).

I have arachnophobia, but this particular variety fascinates me.

Golden Orb Weaver,thanks Daddyo16,
He's in a pretty protected place between the propane tank and the outside wall,he can hang around there as long as he don't come inside.

No, That isn't a golden orb weaver.... It is a garden spider, AKA Writing Spider or banana Spider.
Specifically, it is a black and yellow argiope spider.

They are very beneficial and friendly. I encourage them all over my property because they are voracious mosquito eaters. I move the ones that set up in the open forge area to some nearby shrubbery. If it is in the way, take a stick and sweep it around the web so the spider ends up on the stick. take it to a bush that will allow a web, and place the spider there.

Lots of them over here. You get used to them. They tend to leave you alone if you leave them alone.

Always have to check your swag out bush though. Snakes love sleeping in them, the canvas gets heated up by the sun and they crawl on it there. Scares the shit out of you.

Matt

Once I was driving east on I84 in CT ,early with sun just coming up .Along the side of the road in the high grass were orb webs . Each web had dew which sparkled in the sun. There were enormous numbers too many to even begin to count .What a fantastic sight !!!
Another spider mystery .They sometimes build a web from the side mirror to door on my truck .I can drive for many miles on the interstate and the superstrong web stays right there.

I believe the males of the two spiders mentioned are quite small and tend to be reclusive, so these babies are most likely females.

I saw a golden orb web at a rest stop along I-10 in S. La. that was at least 10' across.

Magnificent creatures.

Your friends and neighbors would know it as a corn spider, although Stacy is correct calling it a writing or banana spider. Most well known around here for making their webs from one row of corn to another. Lot's of kids have run into their webs while playing in the corn fields. Kinda freaky chasing someone through the corn as a kid, moving to a different row and having your nose 3" from that behemoth! Probably the most colorful spider your likely to see in the midwest. It's been years since I've seen one. I recall vibrant green and yellow, but that could be seasonal, male/female, or just my imagination.

Those things are cool, use to see them down by the waterways and such. I try to leave spiders alone when I know which kind they are ecspecially the big house spiders or wolf spiders as they are called for two reasons, they eat bugs and most of all they keep the hobo spiders away (equivalent to brown recluse for the east coast guys).
