I Hate Thumbhole Knives!

Howdy folks, just got back from my local knife dealer...

Tell me, what do a Spyderco Terzoula, Spyderco Endura, Benchmade AFCK, and Benchmade Griptilian all have in common?

THEY ALL HAVE PAIN IN THE BUTT THUMBHOLES.

I don't get it, maybe it's my big, stubby thumbs, but for some reason opening any thumbhole knife is a major effort for me... is there some technique I should be using, or do I really have to write Spyderco totally off my list because of their unwillingness to branch out and my genetic thumbhole problem?

Something of note, i've had no trouble with thumb "slots" for knives, such as those seen on the Gerber EZ-Open or my Leatherman Wave, these are quite easy for me.

It's just weird man... kinda sad too, besides the fact that they were a royal pain to open, I liked some of the Spydercos I handled.

Any help, discussion, or flame would be helpful and/or entertaining.

I really don't know what to say. I have never had any problems opening a spyderco knife. In fact I really like the hole for opening folders.

It takes a little bit of getting used to. Once you get accustomed to it, it's just like a stud or a disk. I remember when I first got a one hand opener, it took me several tries to open it with my thumb. That one had the opening slot/hole (EZ-Out). Then I got a BM 910, and I had to relearn it because it had a disk. Then I got a BM 730, and again I had to relearn it because it had a stud. Now that I'm used to all three, I can open any of them very quickly.

BTW, what part of IL are you from? You're about my age and I'm also from IL.

just my opinion, but I now can't stand thumb studs...I prefer the spydie hole vastly to studs. The pressure, for me, is just more evenly distributed so there's no soreness eventually...but more importantly, the hole locks your thumb into the blade's movement so there's little chance of slippage or connection with the blade's edge.

it just works for me.

Go with whatever works best for you. I prefer studs but holes work fine, and a flipper can also be effective on the right knife.

I actually prefer the Spydie hole to any other one-hand opening device. I suppose these things always come down to subjective preferences.

Don't like holes, don't own a knife with one. Many knives with holes seem to be designed around the hole, "Lets make a knife with this blade...Oh, better add a hump for the hole", at least that's what most look like.

Some custom makers have adopted the hole and produce knives that look good and work well, I don't see why this can't the norm. I don't *like* thumb studs, unless they are well done they are usually a pain. I just usually prefer the lines and looks of the knives with studs.

I agree with Steve-O. I used to like spydies but now don't really care for the aesthetics. Other makers have done a much better job IMO with the hole design. I really like the oval shape myself.

I don't know Youncutter. Maybe if you would include a pic of your stubby thumb it would help. :) I like the thumb holes myself. I sometimes carry a mini-AFCK and once I got used to the hole it became the easiest deploying blade I have carried.

I also have a problem with thumbholes. Happy to know what is not only my problem;)

Try the new Spydercos with the Cobra Hood feature, (ladybug, salsa),combines the hole with a machined steel flange/projection on top which acts like a stud.

YC, you definitely wouldn't like what I have in my back pocket: a large Spydeco Dyad. Two blades, two holes.

Hmmm, ok I might try giving a thumbhole knife a chance to see if I get used to it.

By the way, Chang, I live near central Illinois - around Aurora.

I think that the thumb hole is great! Certainly on of the greatest innovations in knife history! If not the hole, then I'm wavin'!

I think thumbholes are great also, but only if you have opposable thumbs and the manual dexterity of a two year old.

Dang, so close! A new challenge to master after I figure out scissors!:D

Actually the only thing I don't like about my Sebenza's is the thumb stud. I much prefer holes. And thanks to Mr. Mayo that problem is solved;)

Sent the money for this one today:D
