Yes...you have successfully turned me into a "knife snob". My father in law was showing me his new knife the other day (some Chinese made folder), and I just couldn't even try to be interested in it. He was so proud of his new purchase, and it was a genuine piece of crap. I politely handed it back to him and changed the topic.

Thanks guys... lol...

Cheap knife or not, at least he's into carrying a knife, that's a good thing.:D
I find it more annoying, if there afraid of knives.

dc50 brought up a great point, he is going in the right direction... just give him a nudge and show him some of your good stuff

You guys are 100% correct. My father in law is a sportsman, hunter, outdoorsman, and I am fortunate that he and I share that passion. We normally talk guns/hunting/knives, but I just can't convince him to buy "good stuff"...he is always on the cheap side of everything. He considers knives as throw-away items.

Good comments though...

I had a friend like that as well. Slowly but surely I am turning him to the darkside, he went from a knife that could barely open and lock to a Spyderco Persistance. For under forty bucks it is amazing what you can get now. Good luck on helping him see the light

Get him a good knife for his birthday or something so he can experience the feeling of a well made blade :)

Ya know....I started this thread to be a smart @ss, but honestly, its made me think a bit. Maybe I just need to buy him a good knife for Christmas with the hope that he will use and appreciate it. Hmm....

That's the ticket.

If he is that cheap he will likely sell it on Ebay or something. ;)

Not worth the effort or money IMO.

well great!
so now that makes it way easier for you to present him a better made knife gift each time you move up a step higher :-)
and since he considers knives "a throw-away".
figure you'll be doin' each other a real favor.
couldn't think of a better way to bring the family men togather.
oh, and welcome to the anti-pos league.

Think how proud he'll be if you get him something nice he wouldn't ordinarily buy for himself?

A lot of older guys are like that; I know my father was. They'll buy nice things for others but not for themselve's.

I don't let Frugal people near my stuff, I can't stand being near them for more than 30 secs.

I think I get his point. They think we're nuts for spending what we do.

Did I get it right Ankerson?

If he's cheap and you suspect he will sell it or something, you could try and give him a spyderco endura or something of the likes, not alot of money but a lot bang for buck imho.

Pretty much, but it goes well beyond knives though, people like that will try and cheat you out of a penny. ;)

They will drive 50 Miles to save 5 Cents, even though they are spending a lot more than that just to get there and back. Try and explain that one to them, just try....

I have had people argue with me over a penny, really putting up a fit about it.

People can do what they want, but the frugal ones need to stay far away from me.

One the knife topic though, I can't count how many time I have heard this (Enter Cheap gas station Knife here) is just as good or better than (Enter Quality Knife here) and they will argue it to the death.

I have been down that road getting someone something nice only to have them sell it then lie to me about it later, and they weren't poor or bad off either...

I have heard a person that I know talk for 15 mins how they saved $10 by really going out of their way and making a huge deal out of it, making more than one trip etc and they are worth Millions..... Do you know how pathetic that sounded to me.

Absolutely.

And since he does have a knife that he picked out himself, you'll know what style he's interested in.
