I can't get into carrying my knives on a regular basis, at all. I have a nice Spyderco Civilian and a Buck Northshore. Both are great knives, but they spend 90% of the time in one of my drawers or on my desk.

Any advice on getting into the habit of carrying them regularly?

Trade em in for a real knife.

Huh ?? Pretty shitty reply for an honest question. :foot:

Both of those are somewhat large folders , if your not used to , or in the habit of carrying a knife you may consider getting something a bit smaller to "break in" your habit of carrying a knife , did that make sense ? hehe.
for instance , maybe something small like a Spyderco Meerkat or one of thier other little 'cute' folders (Jester , etc) or maybe a little Case slippie.
Next you need to keep thost items by your EDC (wallet , keys , lighter etc) and just put it in your pocket (clip , etc) after you dress.
Soon it will become second nature.

dont really know what uses the civilian has, except defence against humans, it seems to be quite large and not too utilityesqe.

I agree with perhaps starting with a smaller knife, or even a SAK( Swiss Army Knife.), and carry it. Then perhaps you might want to move up to a bigger knife. Or a knife that would fit on your keychain.

Count the number of times during a normal day that a knife would come in handy. For example; opening the mail or a package, cutting a bagel or a steak, sharpening a pencil, removing a staple, cutting out an article or a coupon from a magazine, etc. If you can't think of anything you'd use a knife for, than mybe you don't need one.

Knives are just tools to make your life easier. There are days I don't use any of the knives I have on me, (and yes I carry more than one) for the simple reason, it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Sog, I'm going to make a wild guess that you're not making any friends here.

You say that they're 'nice' knives. I suggest that you go looking for a knife that just screams 'CARRY ME'!!!!! Find a blade that you absolutely MUST carry because it would be an absolute shame to leave it at home.

you could just trade me your civilian for my native? :)

...it's hard for me to think about forgetting to carry, I feel naked when I don't have at least my native on me...

good luck

Put an ALOX SAK on your keyring, you'll find yourself using it more and more everyday and if not, maybe you don't really need an EDC, not every needs one.

Yeah, that's it. It's not designed for utility use, but I'm sure it really excels at what it is designed for.

The Civilian definitely looks like/is for SD. I guess you could cut a bagel with it but the design is for slashing. The Buck, however, looks like a good EDC knife. See if you could get a belt sheath if you like carrying your knives that way. The majority of knives I have are carried in a belt sheath and I find it more convenient that way to carry and deploy that way. You could sell or trade the Spyderco for a knife you will feel comfortable with carrying around all day.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I think I may have the Spyderco Matriarch, and not the Civilian. Still, it isn't very utilitarian for EDC. The Buck was the knife I bought when I joined this site some time ago.. took a LONG time for me to pick it out.

I'll try the suggestions here...

The Civilian might be illegal to carry clipped to your pocket. Depends on where you live. Why take a chance on unintentionally giving an LEO a great gift. ;)

Excellent suggestion. Put a small knife on your keyring so you always have it with you, and see if your opinion on carrying a knife changes over the next few months.

Start by just cutting things that will not damage your blade, envelopes, plastics wrappers, whatever.... before long you'll have no problems using it for the tough stuff.
Baby steps, man... baby steps!
And carrying it with you always will help too.

I just looked up the ALOX SAK, and I don't think I need that. I have a nice SOG Multitool that I sometimes carry..

I think I'll carry the Buck and see how that goes.

Good idea, carry the Buck, play with it, get used to having it around, and you'll soon find yourself comfortable using it.

The late great James Mattis once wrote that he sold a Civilian to an old lady who used it harvesting mushrooms ... :D

I bought my Matriarch for EXACTLY that purpose - what a coincidence! ;) Funny, but with hundreds of knives to choose from, I find that my SAK Alox Soldier is the one that is in my pocket most often these days.

You may want to find out whether you really need to carry a knife or not first. For some people, it is a necessary to carry a knife daily. However, for some other people, it may not be really that necessary. For example, I do not need knife at my work. I just use knife to peel apples at home. My neighbourhood is safe. I do not need a knife to defend myself either. If any threat emerges, I would rather choose to run away as fast as possible or call 911. So I do not carry a knife at all. Knife is a tool and a toy at home for me. If you only want to carry a knife for the sake of carrying a knife, knife would become a burden instead of enjoyment.

Keep your knife in the same place you keep your wallet, keys, and cell phone when they are not carried. That will remind you to take it along.
