Howdy all,

For the first time in several years, someone other than one particular SIL or her husband, has drawn my name in the family X-mas gift giving thing. The theory is that you give the person who has you a list of what you might like to receive. This particular SIL pretty much ignores the list and gets you whatever she wants or can find on sale. She pretty much misses the mark, so I have had to grin and bare it and accept her version of thoughtful gift choosing. Well this year, my MIL got my name and my wife said she'd take care of the gift choosing... which means I get to choose my own gifts!!! There is a $100 limit to keep things relatively sane.

So far, I have ordered a merino wool polo from minus33 and a Coleman lantern carrying case. I have approx $30 left to spend, and I am hoping that you guys can give me some ideas for something appropriately outdoorsy. I don't get the time to go out and do extensive camping, hunting and hiking... at least in the amounts that I would like to, but my interests lie in these categories. I certainly have all the knives, and then some, that I NEED... but am considering another Case Peanut still.

I am hoping that all y'all can give me some suggestions within my price range for one more gift.

Thank you in advance for your choices... pics appreciated if you have them.

A subscription to two magazines that you would enjoy for a full year, being reminded of the gift twice a month and every time you get bored.

guyot wide mouth steel bottle?
or a Condor 10x4 bottle carrier.

How about an LED flashlight?
Already have several... though there is always room for ONE more.

A Victorinox Farmer!!!
Already have one!

Now this really piques my interest... anywhere I can see one in person, like REI? Is it in my cost range?

I currently get three magazines regularly, and am almost a half year behind in reading one, and a month behind in another. It may take another surgery for me to catch up on them.

I like this too...

Keep 'em coming! I like the choices so far.

how about a really nice crystal beer stein? creature comforts, ya know... or a good hat. There's nothing better than a good hat. A good hat is almost as good a friend as a good dog. They get used to hell, are always appreciated and make a fantastic manly gift. Kakadu makes a nice 30 dollar hat if you're into the western/cowboy stuff, and some nice waxed canvas pack hats. Or a nice Irish wool felt golf hat or something like that maybe...

^ PR... If I bought another hat, my wife might kill me. I have probably 100 hats, give or take a few. About 20 of them are in the current rotation. I just got a KUIU wool beanie two days ago, but my eldest daughter already stole it. I have me a nice wool felt western hat that I am wearing today. Have about a dozen Filson hats, of which half or so are waxed canvas.... great hats.

let them have a little shopping fun. ask them for something off of ebay that is Vintage outdoor gear.

The Italian Surplus rucksack is a perfect daypack-waxed canvas at 24 dollars new. Awesome nalgene pockets, great straps, allaround fantastic construction. It's my wannabe-Duluth pack. I get comments on how nice it is all the time. There are a couple of places where you can find them right now.

There are a couple of great surplus axes available right now, some made by the infamous Swedish companies. Or there's Kellam's trade knife series...

You need more books.

Natures Garden - A Guide to Identifying, Harvesting, and Preparing Edible Wild Plants, and A Guide to Identifying, Harvesting, and Preparing Edible Wild Plants by Thayer are both good reads.

Bush Craft by Kochanski

or any of the Survival books by Wiseman

All interesting reads and informative.

That emberlit stove is looking very intrigueing. I found a couple of youtube vids on it, and I'm liking what I see. A friend of mine also threw out another choice that I haven't thought of, and it does sort of qualify as outdoor/camping gear: a portable humidor! I am currently looking into one of these.
