Hey everyone, i have around 300-400 to spend on a folder. The use is manly for Camping, Hiking, Rock Climbing, Rafting and that sort of thing. I would really rather spend less if their is a good knife for that price. Does anyone have any good buys for me?

Thanks :)

Let me be the first to recommend the SEBENZA!!!! Well....... somebody was going to do it. :o :p :D ;)

Strider
Chris Reeve
Spyderco
Benchmade
[Add favourite knifemaker here]

Pick the top of the line knife from any of the above and .... happy camping. :)

the Swamp Rat Rat Trap costs less than half your budget. It is the next knife on my "buy" list. I have only heard good things. Quality for the price. :D I plan on ordering one later this month.

For the uses you listed I would recommend a Benchmade Ritter Grip, available, I think, at Aeromedix.com, and use the extra $$ on an outdoor adventure trip. I would think that the yellow handle small Ritter Grip would be great for your plans.

If you really want to spend that much you could go with a large Sebenza. The nice thing is you can take it apart easily in the field and clean it if you need to.

For a lot less you can still get a great knife, like a Benchmade Doug Ritter Grip or a Spyderco Manix. The Manix will be a little heavier.

Here's a little serendipitdy story:
Right after I made the above post, I went to the aeromedix website to verify my info...well they happen to be having a great deal on the yellow Ritter grip with a pocket survival pak and a cool survival based phone charger...what can I say...I bought one myself. Go figure :D

For what you are planning to use it for you might want to consider a Benchmade Stryker, or the BM Nimravus Cub fixed blade even, or the Boye Dendritic Cobalt folder. Significantly less money than your budget for any of these and they all cut great. Heck buy all three and you'd still be ahead. They all have great ratings for water sports, boating, diving and all that as well as other outdoors activities.

You can read more about their marine uses here if interested. http://www.boyeknives.com/images/review.pdf you will need Adobe to read the PDF file though.

Perhaps you might consider two knives, a folder and a fixed blade.

For the price you mentioned you could get a Ritter Grip folder and a Swamp Rat Camp Tramp, both excellent knives for your purposes and all for less than $250.

Be prepared for a long wait if you order the Camp Tramp.

I already have a RW on the way and i have a Desert Jack from the swamp. :) they are great knives but i am not sure how tough the rat trap is.

For $400 you could get at least 8 Buck 110 folding knives. They would work just fine for camping, have a great warranty and are cheap as well.

I would have to say you would do yourself a favor buying a Benchmade 630 Skirmish.A mini-skirmish if your looking for a smaller knife. The Skirmish is built like a tank, impressive to say the least.I have no doubt this could handle any adventure your thinking of doing. It also is capible of being disassembled, although I can't see a need to as it would be easy to clean assembled.A sturdy frame lock is a good reliable way to go with a survival folder. The price is very affordable for this kind of expensive materials and fit & finish. It is alot more ergonomic than a Sebenza.I used to love Sebbies, and they have a good following.Chris and Anne are good people.I just think at this point the BM630 has the Sebbie beat, all around, but that's just from my initial observation and point of view of my new Skirmishes. :)

For that kind of cash, a Sebenza would seem the default answer as tehy are made from the best materials and are finsihed with incredible precision.

If you were a little more daring, I'd look at a Charles Marlowe. I think his folders are incredible for the money.

At that price, the obvious canned answer is "Sebenza", but why not be different?

These I would consider "semi-custom":
Cutter's Knife and Tool Brend #2
Protech Integrety

At $400, you're nudging customs, and the world's your oyster. Darrel Ralph, Tom Mayo, Larry Davidson, Larry Chew Scott Cook, Robert Terzuola, the list goes on (these happen to be some of my favorites, though I don't own any yet).

For rafting, camping, etc though, I'd get something around $150-250. You know, something you won't cry and whimper over if it gets scratched, or worse, lost. Use the rest to get a good fixed blade.

Or go to www.Cabelas.com and get the BM Briptillian in D2 for around $ 70. I still have a hard time thinking that a $ 400 Knife can outperform the above that much at 6 times the price (I guess this will get the Sebanistas' firing "Flame" at me.)
