hi guys i'm new on this forum...

I currently have a BK9 which i LOVE.... i use it for everything inlcuding chopping and batoning... i rarely use it for slicing food because it's way to thick... i use my small mora for that.... The BK9 is not a massive chopper but it's pretty decent for a knife... and it batons like a champ... now i need something more... i would LOVE to have a Kukri but i thought i'd talk to you guys and get your opinion and see what some of you would suggest!....

Like i said I would love something that can chop better than the BK9 but still allows me to do a little more... as much as i would love a traditional Kukri, i can't afford one so i'd have to settle in for an Ontario or the Cold Steel Gurkha even though for the price difference i'm leaning towards the Ontario... i've also heard that the handle on the Gurkha becomes loose!,,, but then maybe a hatchet is better? maybe a gransfors bruk's? cause something like that i could use as a hammer as well which would help me a lot in the woods... cause right now i found out that the BK9 is not a good hammer! lol... i camp a lot... lost of backcountry camping... so chopping and processing fairly large pieces of wood is very important to me. shoot! and thanks in advance.

Hit the HI portion of the forums ( Himalayan Imports ) and research how the " Deals of the Day " work..... you can buy a good traditional Kuk for under 100.00.....and owning 8 of them myself, I can guarantee they will out preform anything short of a 1500.00 Busse.

The BK21 is also a solid choice.... but for me, its a little long, and a bit light to really be a super chopper..... don't get me wrong, its a BEAST of a knife.... but a traditional Kukri with a near half inch thick spine......that's pure win.

Have a look at the Bk21

That would be a Kukri style as well. haven't seen it in action except for one video on youtube. wasn't that impressed for the price but again, would you say the Kukri is the way to go since i have the BK9 or should i think about something else?

Cold Steel Kukri Machete, but send it out for an edge regrind, or do it yourself.

I'd say go for the Ontario if your really set on getting a khukri. It won't break the bank if you end up deciding a khuk is not your thing.

How about the BK4? It's a monster of a chopper, and it's pretty affordable right now. I have both the BK4 and the BK9, they're both good choppers but the 4 just devours wood, and it also works well for more precise tasks, can be used as a draw knife, etc.

Just thinking outside the box, since it sounds like you want a big chopping knife for not a ton of cash, have you looked at Kabar's parantagtang?
In a similar price range, you might want to look at Condor's Golok.

i'm okay up to like 250 bucks or so as long as it will do what i want it to do... the parangatang won't baton lol. i need something hat chops AND batons well.

you know i have seen my very own BK9 outperform the BK4 at chopping once! honestly!

I have the 5 and the 15 as a great 1-2 combo
The 11 with a tdi clip; great bottle opener and slim descrete carry for bbq's and such.

Next kabar's on my list are the potbelly for a true chopper
And the parangatang, just because it's fun to say, and, why not add another Machete to the folds down the road?

The BK9 is a good solid chopper, but there are better. And for the record, its generally held that the BK9 is a bit better at chopping than the BK4, even when you adjust to the different "sweet spot" mechanics. The BK21 should out chop them both by a fair margin, although I'm not sure on how much since I haven't used one.

You don't think the parangatang will baton well? Its 14in of 3/16in 1095 cro-van, it should do just fine. The Condor Golok is 14in of 1/4in thick 1075, and is also budget friendly. Both of those will out chop the BK9 as well, quite easily.

I have never had any success hammering with a knife. I just use a rock or a log (or my "baton") to pound in stakes, and so far thats worked just fine for me, and makes it so I don't have to carry a tool specific for that job.

And finally, maybe a different idea is to grab a folding saw, and make the knife smaller. While chopping can be fun, I've found that a folding saw cuts the wood to length MUCH faster than chopping (and uses less energy), and its easier to pack/weighs less. Then I bring a fixed blade that can handle some batoning if needed, and I've got my bases covered. Just an idea :).

Check out Condor Tools if you haven't already. They have a heavy khukri that I've eyed for awhile now but never pulled the trigger on as well as some other designs that may interest you. Another blade of theirs I want is the Bushcraft Parang.

If you want a decent hatchet for a pretty good price, check out your local lawn mower repair place and see if they have any made by Husqvarna.

If you want something that will outlive you, buy an estwing.

Chops and batons.... Condor Pack Golok or Village Parang. These are my two favorite short machetes. The Condor Kumunga is a fun one too with a 10" blade. You can do knife stuff with it.

Well, that is the popular opinion on the forums, but I personally like the BK4 more for chopping, I think it's because of the curve of the blade. Condor's heavy duty kukri also seems pretty decent, I'm considering getting one myself. Maybe gonna save up and get a HI Ang Khola. So many options...

that's a smart idea. do you know of any Saw that's super long and folds also? i'm thinking of the Bob Dustrude Quick Buck Saw! and keep my BK9. since the handle has been dipped in white camo! sexy! this way i won't even have to spend much cause to be honest that BK9 is a freaking CHAMP!
