I have a problem. Mnandi?

Really, I'm not addicted.

I've been EDCing a small micarta Sebenza for a year now. I love this knife and I hate to go anywhere without it. (Just try to get me into an airport these days ...)

But everyone once in a while I need to get dressed up. You know: put on slacks or even (gasp!) a suit and take my wife out for the evening. When I do this, the Sebbie just doesn't feel natural. A big part of it is the clip, which I don't like to use when I'm wearing slacks or a suit. But the Sebbie with the clip is just too uncomfortable in my pocket.

So the obvious answer is to take the clip off the Sebbie when I'm dressing up for the evening. Right? Right???

But I just can't shake the idea that what I need is a gentleman's knife for those evenings out. Naturally, I'm thinking a Mnandi. I see that True North Knives has one in bloodwood.

The clip comes off of those, right?

But, no, I don't really need a Mnandi. Right? I can just take the clip off my Sebbie...

I don't suppose anyone here would care to talk me out of this...

No you don't really need a Mnandi. Yes the clip comes off. It's a great carry knife that is relatively sheeple friendly and has a lot of class. It cuts way better than its size might indicate. Plus without the clip in a nice pair of slacks you won't even know it's there. I think a Mnandi would be great for the purposes you describe. Go for it!

You don't need an mnandi but I'm sure that if you bought one it would make you very happy, and isn't that what life is really about, being happy? :)

I won't talk you out of one, but suggest you really get one. It will end up in or on your pocket more than you know. I couldn't pass this one up. It gets carried almost as much as my small Classic, which is pictured with it...

I recently bought a Minandi with fossil ivory scales. It is an elegant, smooth as glass knife, that can be carried anywhere except on planes. I regret that I have to leave it home when I fly. I also have a small and a large classic sebenza.

Contrary to earlier advice, you actually do need one.

Tim :D

"Really, I'm not addicted."

Excepting your sickness is the only way to cure / deal with it.. Cant claim it, if ya cant name it.....

NOW, go pick out a sweet Mnandi and post some damn pix.... sicko.

:D

I didn't need a Mnandi either...
I had a Seb and an Umfaan (another story...) I got the Mnandi, and it has been my 90% EDC for the last 3 years or so... a great little knife, it can do 85% of what the small Sebbie can, and is MUCH more sheeple friendly and "carriable".

No you don't NEED a Mnandi, but you sure want one!

Are you talked out of it yet?

You don't need a Mnandi, but you could really use one. It would fit perfectly as an everyday OR dress knife. Think about it, really, really think about it, think about it some more ...

I find my Mnandi works well with a large Sebenza, handling the small jobs while the Sebenza waits for its chance to carve its way through the world. :D

I keep the clip on mine on the left and clip it to the left side of a left-hand shirt pocket. It is so light that it doesn't weigh the pocket down. Considering what the clip looks like, some of us shift it over next to a pen.

If you don't like clips, buy an Umfaan. No, I won't sell you mine. :p

So please don't take this the wrong way, but as a Chris Reeve Addicts support forum, you guys suck. ;)

OK! OK! I NEED a Mnandi. Clearly there's no point in fighting this. :D :D

So here's the thing. Now that I know that I need a Mnandi, I've been looking around at all the pictures of them online. Since this is to be a dress-up knife for me, I've allowed myself to consider something that I've never thought I'd ever own: Damascus.

There sure are some pretty Damascus blades out there.

But if I buy a Damascus blade and actually use it, is it possible to scratch the blade thereby ruining the pattern? How rugged are those Damascus knives anyway?

Frankly, I'm leery of spending $550 because I'm worried that I'd be afraid to use the thing. And I hate the idea of a knife that I don't want to use. On the other hand, they sure are dressy. On the other hand, there's a lot of nice looking Mnandis out there in S30V and with nice inlays. That would work too.

Thoughts?

Damacus is made to be used, and probably doesn't even show microscratching as easily as a polished finish does -- but you aren't going to be digging in the garden with it, anyway.

The CRK page on Damascus at http://www.chrisreeve.com/damascus.htm doesn't say anything about durability, except that they occasionally get stainless Damascus. You might like to call them to talk about it, though.

I'd say go for the S30V and think about Damascus for a larger blade. The regular Mnandi is a pretty spectacular knife in itself.

Interestingly, the one Damascus Mnandi that I've been eyeing is a stainless steel Damascus. After reading that page on Chris Reeves' site, I don't think I'd ever want a non-stainless Damascus blade.

But you've pretty much convinced me to go with a normal S30V Mnandi. :)

Ooh, decisions, decisions, decisions....

Bulgron, I'm afraid you do need a Mnandi. the very thought of having to remove that elegant little clip and letting your Sebenza rattle around in your pocket with your keys, change and such would just hurt too much.

Besides, that little package of elegant enginnering feels so nice and the clip holds it out of your other pocket contents without interfering with your access to the pocket contents or making your slacks sag with it's weight.

Trust me on this . . . you do need a Mnandi. Pick up a standard model. You'll soon be shopping for an even more elegant one.

I think I can set your mind at ease a bit about the Damascus Chris Reeve uses. First is you do have the option of stainless steel Damascus which is great for using in any circumstance. It's my prefered steel among all others. Second, the CR factory clear coats all Damascus regardless if it is SS or standard high carbon. The etching and steel are protected either way. I carry and use my Gary House Zebra pattern Damascus Mnandi quite often; no problems at all. And it's high carbon non-stainless Damascus.
So feel confident with whichever Damascus you get, it will be very usable and worth every penny paid!

Thanks for the feedback, blackend.

Say, what's the handle material on that knife with the zebra-patterened blade? That goes very well with the blade.

HEY! Doesn't this mean I should just start out with a really elegant one?

Are you guys trying to feed my addiction or something?

:D :D

Here's another Gary House Zebra pattern damascus. I carry and use it quite frequently and it looks great. The size and weight of the Mnandi make it perfect for clipping to a shirt pocket, as was already mentioned.

Thanks bulgron. It's ebony. I'm actually going to have the knife fitted with inner cut mammoth ivory. It should really compliment the blade nicely. Give it a little more character so to speak.

i got one TODAY ....

a large regular Sebenza has been my EDC for years but the bulk and weight
was noticed.

the Mnandi is so light and streamlined i forgot i had it in my pocket; KOOL ;)

get one, you won't regret it

addicted and refusing treatment , Mark
