Generally speaking and under normal circumstances is a usual guideline on comparable value of items being traded what their suggested retail price was? I guess that I'm limiting this to production knives. I have a few to trade and while on the one hand I don't want to insult anyone's intellegence want to feel comfortable telling someone, "you've got to be kidding". Any advice appreciated.

I would say their current selling price. For example if I bought a knife for $50, but is now regularly going for $100, then I would value the trade at around $100. Same if it goes opposite, if I bought it for $100 but now sells regularly for $50, then the trade value would be $50.

I think that answers the question you're asking.

If someone makes a crazy offer I usually just say "no thanks". No reason to get nasty. I have traded a few things that most may have thought was a horrible trade from my end. However, I wanted the item of lesser value more than the item I had so it was no harm for the person to offer it up.

Can't post your "trade value" so I know it can be a bit tricky at times. If you post what you're looking for though it should narrow things down some.

Good luck! I haven't had any bad trades on this forum and "met" a lot of good people.

Most of the time "trade values" can mean very little. If the knife you have to trade is one that you don't want any longer, and the one being offered is one you want, then make the trade if you are happy with it.
