I have a question for you all, how is it possible that i became addicted to knives? It makes no sense, i rarely use one IRL. They're just all so attractive.. like muscle cars only.... more affordable.

How do you guys and girls cope with your disease?

How on earth did i end up with 6 or seven Benchmade's (some double), a stack of Gerbers and a ZT0301 to top it all of?
I thought the knife addiction song was funny... but it's f*c**ng real. I hope my GF never finds out about the madness...

O.k. i have a addictive personality i know. If it isn't sex, drugs or/and R&R my mind is bound to lock onto something else.
But this is getting out of hand, i don't even dare to count up the cost of this new collection.

I HAVE to stop now. I selected a few safe queens: Adamas, ZT0301, 3 Gators, One griptilian.

That leaves me to beat on: 2 mini grips, 4 Gators, One adamas and one Griptilian 551.

This was my confession. It ends here... i'll buy another knife but not before may 2014. Got my mind set on the Bm Contego.

I just sort of learned to accept it. I'm always buying, trading, and selling them. I only have a few "keepers", and even those find their way into a flat-rate box occasionally. I'm always on the lookout for the perfect knife, and, even then, I still get pulled towards new and interesting ones.

I'm on a flipper kick as of late. I have three at home (including the two I'm carrying now), one being carbidized, one going out for sale, and two en route. Prior to that, it was overbuilt framelocks. My budget keeps expanding, and my interests both become narrower and paradoxically more varied.

Stuff has been shipping al across the globe here too. I'm mostly on a US build frenzy at the moment. Benchmade being my fav, the axislock is just awesome.

First step: be poor.

Second step: use them. That way you come to appreciate them over a longer period as they stand the test of time, and you feel less impulsive about buying and selling to just have it in your hand for a bit.

Third step: be poorer.

With my contract running out by the end of December i have the poorness strategy covered.
Indeed, using them is the right but sometimes difficult way to go. that's why i selected a few good users and a few safe queens. The safequeens however feel kinda 'dead'. They are like pretty virgins locked in a tower.

There is not a cure to this disease besides setting it aside for awhile and focusing on another addiction. For me it is guns, knives, watches for the things I collect. Guns and knives tie for fist place but I tend to prefer guns but usually they are more expensive and I end up spending the same on knives.
As to you addiction I would say your just starting and a lightweight compared to many members on here, so just wait it gets worse. Try exercise to get your mind off it, if that does not work then buy a gun while you wait for you May 2014 deadline which you will most likely change and move way closer. It happens to just about all of us.

What problem?
You haven't even started with custom knives.

I agree with everything said. I have a custom knife on the way at the moment and can,t seem to stop. Help!!

The only time I am not buying and selling knives is when I am on vacation. You can see the dilemma... The only way I can stop my addiction is if I quit my job and wander the earth like Caine from Kung Fu.

Garreth, use this formula to determine the maximum and minimum number of knives you should have. If you exceed the recommended maximum, you might consider cutting back and being more selective about your purchases. The bigger concern is if you haven't met the recommended minimum.

Minimum: Age x 12. (Averaging one knife purchase per month)
Maximum: Age x 52. (Averaging one knife purchase per week)

:D

Addiction is no joke. I know.
(1)Just own one or two knives or a few.
(2)Sell a knife to buy a knife or you can trade.
(3) Do NOT spend money you do not have and do NOT get into debt.
I just went through this and I sold most of my knives to a friend who is a dealer. I kept two favorite folders and two fixed blades. I am DONE.

Seriously, this. Don't purchase non-critical consumer goods on credit, or spend more on any hobby than you can comfortably afford.

The good news is, with specific regards to our knife enthusiast hobby, you don't have to spend a lot of money to buy a quality product or even to build a decent-sized collection.

I find my ability to conrol my knife addiction a little bit better than most because I get bored with items rather quickly. So My collection is never larger than 15 or so knives at the most and sometimes I can have as little as 3-5. Though now I have a few that will be exceedingly harder to get rid of. Though I must admit I have said this in the past and they are now gone. If you have the ability to let go of some of your older desirable pieces to make room for new ones you can have fun in this hobby without burning too many bills. Its the people who hoard and have so many knives they find $800 folders in a drawer they forgot they even had for years that I envy and pity at the same time.

Agreed. I've downsized but not quite as far as Rolf! I've only got five or six folders.....and they are all carried in the rotation. However, my fixed blade tastes have changed....towards the more expensive sadly....and now I'm pretty much into custom-made. I don't own nearly as many as I did but probably have more into them than I did in the past. I have found that if I don't use it I get rid of it.....that has made it easier in my mind to continue with my sickness!! My wife probably doesn't agree but what can you do!!!!?????

Mostly when I buy a new knife I think, will this replace what I carry everyday or into the woods.
Hard to replace my current edc rotation, a bm grip, pm2, and gec cattle roper. The woods get my bk2 or Mora.

You're doing it wrong!

Step 1: Buy a membership here

Step 2: Sell all of the safe queens, reduce the number of ones you want to beat on to 2-3 knives, not 8, then sell those too

Step 3: Take the money from all of your sales and use that to buy ONE or TWO really really nice knives. Let those be the safe queens. Get a Sebenza, get a custom, get something that can't be replaced in 10 seconds like the rest of your safe queens.

Step 4: Let the new safe queen(s) sit and admire them, play with them and enjoy them.

Step 5: When you are tired of the safe queen sell it for anywhere from a small loss to a small profit (depending on what you buy).

Step 6: Take that money and either use it or add to it and buy another really nice safe queen.

Step 7: Go back to step 4 and repeat ad infinitum.

Thank you, no joke indeed. With 18 knives in the collection i have enough knives right now to last me for years i'f i'd use them all. 9 of them are users so let's say they last 7 years each the way i use them. That's 63 years of use combined. Haha

Good sane advice of you all. Thanks
