I have a serious problem.

Addiction is no joke. I know.
(1)Just own one or two knives or a few.
(2)Sell a knife to buy a knife or you can trade.
(3) Do NOT spend money you do not have and do NOT get into debt.
I just went through this and I sold most of my knives to a friend who is a dealer. I kept two favorite folders and two fixed blades. I am DONE.
rolf

Pretty much this.

This time last year I had a few dozen $50-$250 knives

I'm down to under a dozen knives in the $350-$700 range. Outside of selling off all of my other knives, the only other resource I used was selling my old Musicman Bongo bass.

Couldn't be happier or more satisfied.

Any half-decent knife can last a lifetime if properly cared for and not abused. Kind of takes the fun out of collecting though, huh? :)

I took all the knives I had in my pocket yesterday and put all 8 of 'em on the table and added up the cost, it came to just a little under $1,400, I have a problem and I know there are people in way worse shape than I am. It took me 40 years to get where I'm at accumulation wise... ;)

Buy a $500 knife.

it stopped me for the most part.

I had about 10-15 knives on my 'to get' list and after the $500 knife I cant look at 'cheapies' anymore and just use the ones I have.

Did you guys steadily increase your budget per knife as time went on?
My first decent blade was 70, then 90, then 120, ect. Now I'm about to spend $200 for my first time. It's scary. Because I've got tabs to sebenzas and strider a all ready. Should I just skip the progression...? Or should I keep steadily working my way up?
(I get benchmades for 55% off so it helps. :) )

I noticed that too, my first Gerber Gator at 69 euro's was what i considered a expensive serious knife. Then i got a griptillian at 90 euros. Adamas, and finally ZT0301
55%? Nice!

I'm about to buy a zt. Maybe 0301
Unless I say F$@* it and get an smf...

*long sigh...* our petty little problems...

Hehe
"My names peter, and everyone around me thinks I have an addiction and a problem but I don't agree. Thank you."

OP, I suggest giving something like this a shot:

(1) - Purchase one high-end "grail" midtech knife, such as a CRK. These knives are amazing quality and function with an entirely different feel. They will cause most peoples' interest in collecting and hoarding lesser priced knives to drop. Few people have enough disposable income to purchase a large number of these knives. These knives, ironically, also hold the most value.

(2) - Sell off knives in your collection that you rarely use. It will feel a little hard letting them go, but you will enjoy the results.

I've owned the ZT 301 and while it is a very nice knife it is nowhere close to the Strider SmF....get the SmF!! You won't regret it....

Smf or sng. Get one. You won't regret it. I just bought a custom and am done for now. Can't wait til it gets here. The anticipation is killing me.

Just bought my 15th folder, and I have 6 fixed blades. Houston, I have a problem.

The only time I am not buying and selling knives is when I am on vacation. You can see the dilemma... The only way I can stop my addiction is if I quit my job and wander the earth like Caine from Kung Fu.

You will first have to snatch the pebble from my hand Grasshopper.
Cheers

How on earth did i end up with 6 or seven Benchmade's (some double), a stack of Gerbers and a ZT0301 to top it all of?
I thought the knife addiction song was funny... but it's f*c**ng real. I hope my GF never finds out about the madness...

O.k. i have a addictive personality i know. If it isn't sex, drugs or/and R&R my mind is bound to lock onto something else.
But this is getting out of hand, i don't even dare to count up the cost of this new collection.

GOOD LORD MAN!

You need more ZT's:eek:. 200, 300X, 560 - this list goes on. IMO they are some of the finest large overbuilt folders in my collection.

And forget the sex drugs and Rock and Roll - too distracting and expensive. Firearms and machetes hold their value better. :D

I'd have to agree with that. Collecting is fun but as someone said, your hobby should not come before financial obligations.

But consider, you pay certain bills every month of the year. Does that mean you are addicted to utility services; electricity - internet, phone, cable? Rent/mortgage payments. Car upkeep and insurance. Could you get by without one of these things? Some people do/would in order to fund their hobbies. Some else's priorities may be (and very likely are) quite different.

The issue that needs to be resolved is that (IF) YOU FEEL COLLECTING KNIVES IS PROBLEM FOR YOU. You are the one that needs to resolve this. But it sounds like you DO think it is a problem for you. Easy solution - stop buying knives. Spend less time online. I find that the more online time I log the more likely it becomes that I will end up in a shopping cart or two.

Good thing is lots of BF folks are chiming in for ya - a great safety net!

Honestly, I have just given in and gone with it.
Yes, I have an addiction but it's not really killing me. Yes, I have too many knives but as I stated, I have given in so I don't see it as a problem.
I am a functioning addict and so are my knives. To me, it's a constant search for that one little friend you have been dying to meet all your life.
Cheers

Lol. I think you came to the wrong place for help. The advise I keep reading is to buy another knife (and expensive ones at that). It's like telling a marijuana addict to try cocaine instead! Just accept it. After all there are worse addictions out there than steel:).

Cocaine eh? Never thought about that. Is there a forum for it?

Ive only been collecting alittle over a year now and own 87 Kershaws and 14 ZTs......I have no clue how to stop even if i wanted too.

AN ADMAMAS AND A 301 AS SAFE QUEENS!!??
No way! Those knives were made specifically to beat on!

I'm not telling ya what to do with YOUR knives, but you will appreciate them much more if you use them.
