I have a Spyderco Military should I get a BM 710?

I already have a Spyderco military for EDC and want to add another knife in the EDC rotation. I was considering the BM 710. The only problems I see with the 710 when compared to the Military is that the 710 is thicker and weighs more. But It is a bit more streamline which I like. I would hate to get the 710 and carry it a few times only and start collecting dust. What do you guys think? Anyone have both? Please help. Thanks in advance.

I only own the 710, not a mille but its a classic- streamline like you say, and very strong. I'm sure you wont be dissapointed. Not sure what the weight difference is, but I imagine it cant be much. I have mine in D2 which kinda gave me a hard time to get sharp, but being its the the only knife I have in D2 it could have been me.
Its literally a razor now. :D

And if by some chance you dont like it (highly doubtful) it would be a breeze to move along.

Ya never know, the Military is to Spyderco what the 710 is to Benchmade. Your Military might be the one collecting the dust. Don't worry you'll love the 710, it's a wonderful knife. I have both and the 710 is more pocketable and the usable blade is just as long. :)

Thanks for the info! I am a step closer on ordering a 710 lol seriously...I really like the you mention it is more pocketable which I really like. Not saying the Mil is not. Just looking for something different. How is the handle ergo compare??

The G-10 is a little more sticky on the Military than the 710, but for EDC I don't think it makes a bit of difference. The 710 has a nicer blade size to handle ratio, the Military has a huge handle - they're both "must have's" for a knife collection IMO.

I own the 710 and will alway have one if I can. It's a long purposeful blade in a small package. The Military is a big knife even if it is light and narrow. I didn't find many situations where I wanted to carry it as a civilian walking downtown if you get me. So now I don't own a Military.

Get the 710 it is a flagship knife for BM. You'll love it.

i have several millies & 3 710s. really they are different knives but both qualify for large easy carry edcs. there is certainly nothing wrong with b.m.s d2 . actually it outcut my coated s30 on sisal.extended carry thru the years has not made either model work loose. if you can swing it these models are both zeniths for pocket carry. the millie is a slightly better slicer on food but speaking for utility & possibly defense my nod goes to the 710.

At this point I've probably got half a dozen different 710s. I agree with some of the posts above that everyone ought to own a 710, at least long enough to give it a fair trial. There's a good reason (lots, actually) why this knife is still in the BM catalog a dozen years after it was introduced, with essentially no changes other than blade steels during that period.

It's a little pricey compared to the regular D2 version, but you might want to consider the KW dealer limited edition in M390 stainless. M390 has been getting rave reviews from various testers.

of course you should !!!
to give you an idea, i own a sebenza, an umnumzann and many others, but the 710s are by far the most carried ! my favorite knife till now

I'd have thought you'd want an Emerson? :) just kidding but couldn't resist...

I've owned both and found the 710 was a bit too streamlined for my taste and grip
the weight didn't seem to be much of an issue to me, but the narrower handle was.

BUT as others have found, they really love the knife and that's why we have so
many wonderful choices, just wanted to make mention that sometimes trim isn't
always a big plus.

Good luck in your search!

i have been eying the 710 as well. i have been looking at it for a very long time...i cant decide between the satin finish or the coated blade. its D2 steel, so i thought the coating would add a lot of added corrosion resistance. however, i like how the grind lines show up on the satin finish... i'm off topic and i dont want to hijack the thread...so i will say

710 is the one i like. weight isnt a huge factor for me when i choose and EDC. what is a huge factor is how well a knife rides in the pocket. Spydercos tend to be pocket hogs IMHO.

I love my 710 - blade shape, comfortable carry, good steel, makes it one of the best. My hands are somewhat big though and, like Gary, I find the handle to be somewhat narrow and thin.

Both are good Knives, the Military is a much bigger knife, fills the hand much better if you have big hands.

The 710 is much closer to the Para 2 in size, but the Para 2 also fills the hand better IMO.

It's going to come down to how they feel to you.

I own both. I don't feel much difference carrying them. The 710 opens and closes about 1000x easier than the Military. The Spydie is probably the better slicer, but not by much. The 710 carries tip-up only, the Military tip-down only.
They're both very good knives, I prefer the BM (but not by much) because it's smoother and because it's tip-up carry, which is my personal preference. I also don't like the fragile tip on the Military. But having delayed buying the Military for a long time because of the tip-down only, I can say that that was a mistake. It is a very good folder. I wish Spyderco would get around making it tip-up.
As for the 710, you can't go wrong with it. Out of more than 60 folders, it's the one my wife likes most :D and that must mean something!

I traded my Military for a 710. I'm happy with the trade.

The Military is a much better cutter, but the handle is just way too bulky, making it uncomfortable to carry, hold, and use. It's a really good knife, but those things keep me from wanting it.

On the other hand, the handle of the 710 is much better (for my hands.) It's easier to hold and easier to carry. The G10 doesn't have much grip, but I've never found that to be much of an issue on any knife. I also like that they minimized handle size and made the tip of the blade almost at the end of the handle when closed (whereas on the Military, there's a half an inch or more of handle after the tip.)

710 wins for me. The only thing I don't like about it is tip-up *only* carry.

Go for it !
And once you get axis lock adiccted, you'll see...

Why don't you show the real difference - which is none at all.

Pull the Military back to even out the usable cutting edge beside the 710 then show an even up cutting edge to cutting edge side by side of the Para-2 & 710.

Funny, the illusion one can make with a camera and a few words.

Thanks everyone for your time answering my questions. You guys are great!!! Big thanks to Ankerson for the pictures. I am definitely getting a 710 now!
