I have a Spyderco Military should I get a BM 710?

At this point I've probably got half a dozen different 710s. I agree with some of the posts above that everyone ought to own a 710, at least long enough to give it a fair trial. There's a good reason (lots, actually) why this knife is still in the BM catalog a dozen years after it was introduced, with essentially no changes other than blade steels during that period.

It's a little pricey compared to the regular D2 version, but you might want to consider the KW dealer limited edition in M390 stainless. M390 has been getting rave reviews from various testers.

JN definitely has it right. I waited a long time to get my 710 knives, as I was completely hooked on the Military. Truth is that I am still hooked on the Military, but I am also hooked on the 710 as well. Both knives are sufficiently different in their own right, that I don't see a duplication of features. JN also mentioned the M390 versions and if you can swing it, I highly recommend these knives. I have never seen a steel that can take a mirror edge and hold it like M390: truly a super steel. Not that there is anything wrong with D2.

I really wish I can pick up the limited M390 steel but I really don't want to spend the extra $ on it. I just bought a BM 710!!! THANKS EVERYONE for making my decision so easy.

You're going to love it. congrats! Don't forget pics when you get it.

Why don't you show the real difference - which is none at all.

Pull the Military back to even out the usable cutting edge beside the 710 then show an even up cutting edge to cutting edge side by side of the Para-2 & 710.

Funny, the illusion one can make with a camera and a few words.

Trying to show the difference in handle size, and height of the knives. ;)

They are a lot different.

It's funny you ask this. These are the two knives i was deciding over for christmas. I love the axis lock, i like benchmade, the d2 blade steel is awesome but there was something about the military i liked. I like the spyderhole, the grippy g10, integrated liners, s30v steel, the blade shape, flat grind, color, versatility. My next knife will be a 710 though, my grandfather owns one and he's given it a beating. Being a mechanic he has an extensive (multi tho $$ tools) set of tools, yet, he always uses his 710 for everything. Screwdriver, cutting wire, prying. The tip's still intact, the edge is still good (i sharpen for him, but no chips ever), it's smooth. It did have a lot of dirt and lint in it so after i cleaned, sharpened and oiled it, it was so much smoother than he remembered. It takes an awesome edge too, he has the 154cm version. You'll love it. The g10 is a bit click though.

the 710 is a beautiful functional knife, they do call it a modern classic
you have to hold one to understand that
I have both, and yes, military is a better slicer, more utilitarian, but the 710 is a great cuter too, and more like beautiful, simple, and elegant
the G10 used on the 710 is not as grippy as the spyderco military, and is more "slippery"
I like them both ,
here are some pics

What else can be said about the 710 that has'nt been said already? It is an awesome knife, you're going to love it.

I have been steadily moving up to the higher end knives as of late but the 710 will always remain in the rotation. The fact that it can hang with knives costing many times as much should say something.

Way to go Steven !!!
Nice collection you got there...

And, where's the 806D2 ?????????
Did you just miss it or you don't like holes on your blades ? ;)

The question now is, do you have a ZT0200?
:foot:
(Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

To comment on the 710 and Mili. I find the Military to pretty much be the ultimate folder if you have large hands. After owning the 710 for about five years now, I find the handle a little awkward. That's mostly because I like a really long thumb ramp, or a straight flat spine. As far as thumb ramps go, the 710 is one of the worst.

710 is my favorite, just playing with the Axis lock is addictive, don't get me wrong the military is a very good blade but my 710 is in my top ten list in my collection.

I had an 806-701 S30V AFCK (blade seen here in the G10 handle of my 805):

..and also 555, 555HG and 550HG Griptilians, but I found that I have a preference for thumb stud openers and have sold all my hole-opener Benchmades.
