I have always been rich.

Great post Mike! An excellent perspective that I can certainly relate to as well. Would love to see some pics of that old shotgun

I don't generally Post to the Busse section but this thread caught my eye and I read it. I know where you're coming from.
I'm getting ready for a move down to Southern California pretty soon so my wife and i have been packing up the house. Turns out I have have more books than anything else. Boxes of books probably make up half of my possessions at the moment. My wife will probably never understand, she asked my the other day which books we could get rid of...

I agree, very well written. I on the other hand would like to see pics of the 1st knife. Mine was a Kabar Barlow, given to me when I was in kindergarten by a family friend who had a hobby selling knives at Bill Goodman's Gun and Knife Show......the first place I saw Jerry Busse several years later.

I too was not only allowed to roam the farm with knife and gun but also carry a knife every day, including at school.

Very touching and meaningful story! While I was very very fortunate to have a storybook childhood, I was never more happy then when I got a simple and cheap pocket knife, small axe, BB gun or bow and arrow. These were not common items for a city / suburb kid to want or need. It is easy to lose sight of what can truly make you happy. While my tastes have changed to premium goods as I have gotten older, my true focus is on quality items, no matter what the price and true quality costs dearly. With that being said, there is some real value out there these days and if you let the "brand snob" get hold, you can miss out on some real nice and affordably priced and well-made stuff. While I love my Busse's, CRK's, Hinderer's, what is available on the "low end" is truly amazing. $50 Kershaws and Spyderco's have come along to such a degree that they can no longer be ignored. The money I pay for my collection I consider money well spent because I know if I do my part, my kids and grandchildren will be using them!!

For that 10 year old kid with the small box of misc folding knives, some rusty and some with broken blades, I would tell him to have a blast and take better care of your stuff!!! LOL
