I've had good luck with Japanese "knives erasers." Basically a mild abrasive bonded to a hard rubber bar. Lubricate with water and rub gently.

Works like magic on carbon steel, like my Japanese kitchen knives, Old Hickory boning knife, Opinel folders, etc.

If you don't use enough lubrication and/or apply too much pressure, then you can scratch the blade. So, you need to be a little careful.
 
Mothers mag polish also works great,, doesn't scratch like the rust erasers can
