I have had about enough of this!

I agree with you Richard, and with you Nobody. Common sense and responsibility for ones self have gone out the window in our society. Praise God that I do not have any kids to try to raise up right in this crazy country and world. People all around me seem to simply lack the intelligence, upbringing, and foresight to act responsibly and decide for themselves. I deal with these type of people every day. Yet, I also deal daily with a select few who posess these attributes in abundence. It is heartening to know that others share my view and that I can come here and find like minds and intellligent discussion of the current social situation.

We must have freedom in this country and this world. We can not EVER stand for petty tyrants and their hired slaves telling us what is good for us (when we know it is not) and trying to make us slaves or, worse, slaves and mindless sheep. I personally hope all intelligent people will wake up and start taking their freedom seriously and in their own hand before we face losing it. DO NOT GIVE IN! As Bob Marley and the Wailers said "Stand up for your rights." I would encourage all knife and gun users to carry publicly and even openly. Make this right your right. Show everyone that we are here and we are not going to take the erosion of our freedoms. And try to vote for those who will preserve our freedoms. Teach your children to be free and to be responsible to themselves and those around them.

damn, the laws suck. I have to drop off my knife at my friends house everyday before going to school. If i got into a fight, F*** the knife I'd take out my anger and beat the S*** out of the other guy. But if I felt seriously threatened (like I was getting jacked by some big sole) then I would pull it, if he still comes after me, I'd F***EN RUN MY A** OFF!

When I was in high school (California, Ventura County, '70 - '74) you could carry most any kind of knife to school, even fixed blades. There was never any problem, even from the 'bad' kids.

After school, you could walk down the sidewalk with your .22 rifle to go plinking in the hills. If a cop drove by, he'd stop and check that your chambers were empty, then say 'have a good time'. We had fewer school shootings than we do now.

Of course, back then the shop teacher could take the rowdy kids out back and slam them against the wall. In retrospect, I'd have to say I was at a lower risk than kids today.

Something has certainly gone wrong between then and now, but I'll be danged if I can put my finger on it.

Well, it's an overall mentality these days. People are happier living dry, shallow lives, as long as they are safe, as I notice more and more people doing. When I told several people I intended to start riding a motorcycle, they said, "Yeah, it's fun, but what a death trap!" You can have freedom or you can have safety, but not both.

I agree fully. Here in Finland it's illegal to carry any knives at publicplaces, without a good reason, for example if you are a constructionworker you can carry knife legally. Even though it's illegal I carry Spyderco spydercard and Cold Steel tuff lite at highschool and everywhere else. If some teacher would find out I think I would be in trouble but I just have to keep low profile with my knives and hope no one will notice them.

The times have sure changed. Back in ’59 I was a sophomore in high school and made my first handmade knife in metal shop. I still have it on my workbench and it has a 7” blade. Most of the guy’s (no girls in metal shop) made machetes and swords. We not only carried knives legally in school, but we made them too.

Good Afternoon All-

Richard Sommer, that was an excellent rant! Like many posters here, I'm sure we're all reading from the same sheet of music and agree on many points. You're also correct that we're witnessing an entire generation of sheep being raised. I'll give you two personal experiences:
  • Experience 1: While standing behind two professional businesswomen on the sidewalk, I overheard their conversation about airline safety. One woman mentioned: "If I were in an airplane right now, I would feel much safer with a fighter jet escorting me!" Meanwhile, I'm thinking, "Lady, the only tools that F-16 pilot has are missiles and 20mm cannons. Reeeaaal comforting if you're a salesman from Tulsa in row 11-D." If I were in a plane being hijacked, I don't want any outside "help" for the situation. My fellow passengers and I will resolve the problem ourselves, thank you very much.
  • Experience 2: Some of the movie theaters in my area wish to peer in handbags and fannypouches for "weapons" as you hand your ticket to the pimply-faced, teenaged beanpole. You would not believe the number of adults who obediently open their bags for an inspection! I usually say, "I appreciate your offer, no thank you!" and brush past them with a smile. They don't quite know what to do. The theater is using terrorism as an excuse to look for candy and smuggled sodas and the majority of people take it hook, line, and sinker. What would the 130lb kid do anyway if I brought a .45 semi-auto in my fannypack? Safety, my foot.
Ruefully,

1) Knott's Berry Farm here in So. Cal. will search your bags when you go in and will not permit so much as a SAK classic if they find it. But you can go in and buy a big bowie or lots of other knives at the knife store. Real smart.

2) I have told my kids they are not to start fights and they are to walk away from them if they can but if they are being physically assaulted and have no choice, they have my permission and encouragement to hit back twice as hard and keep hitting til the threat stops. And they can get expelled from every school in a 50-mile radius and we will homeschool them if they do.

Bravo! My sentments entirely.

I really admire you parents who will stand up for your children's rights at school. The right to self-defense does not stop at the school property line. I also am happy to see the resolve to homeschool or find other school arrangements for children who have problems at their school. If I ever have any children, I plan to homeschool them. The public school system is just government programming by our increasingly fascist government. Prepare them all to think and act similarly so that they are easier to manipulate and control as adults. The sheep training academy.

I must be a government shepard...

This is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadddddddddddddddd.
Take one step foreward in our constitution and then prepare to take 20 steps back by the politicians! As Shakespear said,"the first thing we need to do is kill all of the lawyers".
But then in this day and age who would tell us and our kids what is right and wrong. Its just a wonder that the human race has made it so far without Opra and Doctor Phil to tell us of our wrongs, our parents wrongs and our childrens potential to just be bad people.OOps,I guesse its time to turn on the TV so I can learn how to raise my children ,cook my food, eat what I am supposed to,buy what is the norm and laugh and cry when I should!
Yes,America is the land of the free........................................

Don Luis said that the US government is acting as one dog trying to protect a herd of many sheep.

It's true, too. My German teacher posed the question the other day "Why are you guys even here?" and told us about how he often thought about how trained humans are into thinking "This is the way it has to be", when really citizens could always rise against governent for anything they were unhappy about. If tomorrow every kid in my school dropped a pocket knife, from a United Cutlery to a Sebenza, into their pocket, or even if the majority did, and this became a widespread thing; people carrying knives around like in the old days, what could they really do about it?

Far fetched? Probably, but think about it.

I find myself thinking a lot about how sterile the United States has become. If you spill a McDonalds coffee on yourself, that's THEIR responsibility? Thirty years ago, you would have been the laughing stock of everyone. What were you expecting? When you said "I'll have a medium coffee, black" were you expecting a cup of fresh made chilled lemonade? Take some self-responsibility. You spilled your coffee, you hurt yourself, walk it off.

But you must know that as the coffee seeped through that woman's pants her brain automatically reminded her that she shouldn't have to be responsible for herself, and that being a clumsy ditz does not entitle her pain and a lesson learned, it entitled her to a huge lawsuit.

It's that same mentality that has reduced Victorinox's school products to backpacks and bad looking sweaters. Not every kid can be trusted with a knife. One kid may want to knife someone who made fun of them, but do you think a zero-tolerance policy is going to stop that? No. And if one kid is going nuts with a knife, a group of kids with knives can stop him before he hurts anyone. Others will be irrepsonsible with knives by vandilizing or playing with them. You know what you do then? Backhand the little brat. It's about time America stepped out of its lingerie and buttoned its flannel overshirt to deal with the real problems. Quick quiz:

Find the real problem:
A. Student X brings his pocket knife to school, uses it occasionally for cutting chores.
B. Man trips out of his own lack of coordination outside of a building, sues the owner.

If you answered A, you are the problem. If you answered B, you're right. People need to start taking responsibilty for themselves. Whatever happened to dignity?

At my school, bookbags are placed at the front of the cafeteria to prevent people bringing weapons, eggs, what-have-you to either commit a massacre or start a food fight. It's a massive inconvenience, is a huge contributor to hall congestion, and gets nothing accomplished. It's exactly like the knife issue

Hmm, even in NYC schools, I've seen kids bring knives it to threaten each other with. (usually gangstas at each other)

Glad to see so many of us agree. Only two things are left to say and I didn’t say either of them.

“Freedom is always in danger and the majority of mankind will always acquiesce in its loss unless a minority is willing to challenge the privileges of its few and the apathy of the masses.” - RH Crossman 1952

“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.” - Helen Keller
