and I think a RAT 3 is the only thing that will scratch it. I have been reading on line and I read on the cumberland knife works site the RAT 3 is differentially treated, are the older models also? Chris

It means it is discriminated-against by other knives.

Kidding aside, I think Runningboar means it's differentially heat-treated, so as to leave the edge hard so as to retain a sharp edge, while leaving the remainder of the blade somewhat softer and less-brittle, in order to keep the blade from snapping. Kind of a tricky thing to accomplish, so you see it most often in well-hand-made blades. Himalayan Imports khukuris are differentially heat-treated, for example. I don't know if the RAT knives are differentially-heat-treated or not.

Exactly, A samuri sword is the best example I can come up with, it has a visibly different temper, called a hamon I think. Chris

I keep hearing rumors that the Randall/Ontario relationship is about to end. Anyone have the staright poop on that?

The new RAT Cutlery RC-3 is differentially heat treated. The Ontario RAT line is not.

We will still be doing collaborations with Ontario and the current Ontario RAT line will stay as it is. The new RAT Cutlery line will offer some improvements in overall fit and finish, edge symmetry and sheath upgrades.

Best regards,

Jeff Randall

I own both RAT3 in 1095 and D2 blade and I have the RAT3 1095 as a EDC knife but I love them both and great for relieving that itch,Now I can't wait for the new RAT line to surface...

I recommend cortisone cream or penicillin, depending on the location. :D

The RAT-3's just going to make you itch more!

Da*n it....... Guyon beat me to it;) :D

Be careful however..... the RAT-3 is a little touchy compared to the old back scratcher. Depending on where your itch is..... you might end up with a few less appendages:eek:

To clear up any confusion, the RAT-3s and other models of our current line will still be available from Ontario. There are no plans to change that. RAT Cutlery knives are a new line and have nothing to do with the Ontario line.

Jeff

I have a RAT and RTAK and I really like the RAT, it holds an edge real well(D2) and I keep it real toothy. Feels good in the hand and I really like the way the horizontal teck lock carries.

That new design of the RAT 3 looks great. I liked the original, but the handle was a bit small for me. This one looks a little longer. Ilike the straighter, pointier blade too. Great work Jeff.

Mora makes a diff treated knife called a Triflex in carbon. Its my favorite mora

I think I feel the same itch...must be contagious

I just itched myself in oblivion. Went to Spyderco outlet today to pick up a blade for a guy I work with and get mine touched up. I started looking at the Hossoms. Well I came home and bought a Hossom Dayhiker, and a Becker BK7, and a custom Ranger RD5. This needs to stop!

Soon I'll have a collection like Guyon, yeah right! :D

Thanks a bunch guys, now I can't make up my mind if I want an old one or one of the new RATs.;)

Jeff,
Thanks for taking the time to post and answer our questions, you definitely just sold at least one knife.  Chris

I have the same itch! I have a RTAK anda Rat7, The rat 7 is my favorite so far and the rat3 looks like it fits my itch bill just fine ;)
