This knife appeared at a garage sale in the early 1990's. My friend found it, but he didn't have $120 to buy it.
He contacted another friend, and he secured it. As often happened in those days, it was sold later the same day for $500 to another bloke I know.
I never got to see the knife as the eventual owner wouldn't show it to me. About 2 years ago, I offered him an obscene amount for the knife, but he still
wouldn't even show it to me.
Anyway, last year the owner passed away. I was told someone had first dibs on anything from the estate, so I figured I would never see it.
A month ago, the guy who originally found the knife called me to advise he had some knives. I bought the 15 or so knives he showed me.
A few days later we met up again at the monthly antique fair, he had another 20 odd knives. So, I bought them and anything else that caught my eye. I rushed off to find more early deals
and told him Id be back before I left to pay him whatever I owed. A few hours later, having wasted considerably more funds buying useless dead people's crap, I returned to his stall
to settle my account. After we got the business out of the way, we sat around talking shit for a while. My friend casually mentioned that he had this knife.
He said, didn't you make a big offer to the former owner? I said yea, I offered him $?000 for it. He said, it won't be that much.
Anyway, here it is. I believe it was given by the company Captain to a Sargent for saving his life. The former owner says that the event is mentioned in the "dispatches" of the time.
I have done no research into this item as yet.
