My brother in law is getting married, and I have been requested to make a cake set.

I guess forge finish ain't gonna work, this is a more or less tradtional wedding sort of thing.

I'm still tempted to use carbon, maybe even make a chainsaw damascus, but I should consider what stainless I can work here at my low end shop. And what I'm going to do about the cake server.

And the handles! the color for the wedding is "eggplant and ivory" but otoh, I've used wengewood for all of the family gift knives I've made, so I have that theme as well.

Anyone have any suggestions?

If you want to stay away from naturals, some ivory paper micarta would look great as handle scales. Probably consider a stainless for steel; if you can't HT it yourself, you can send it out easily. I'd keep in mind that this type of gift will likely be kept and stored for a long period of time. I'd be concerned about corossion, so that's why I'd choose stainless.

I hadn't really thought of paper micarta, that might work. I have been reading up on the 440 series. I should be able to do okay with that, maybe.

The long term storage part actually doesn't bug me so much, There are some durable paste oils that can be applied. OTOH, they live in satna cruz, and it's a bit humid

I'd recommend 440c or ATS-34 both are good clean start for stock removal. I dont recommend 154cm unless it's CPM154cm due to alot of mill scale pitting in the steel.
Admiral has both in 6"x36" sheet stock to start with. I'd recommend 1/16" - 3/32" thickness since they will be slicers. Paul Bos will heat treat for a resonable price. Good Luck and have fun. ( MOP bolsters would be awesome to :D)

You could also get stainless damascus...Would purpleheart be close enough to eggplant ? You could mix that with irory micarta.

purpleheart might work. I need to get some in my hands and finish it up to see.

here is a picture of a set I did years ago.it has a cable Damascus blades and I used corian and synthetic pearl spacers for the handles to best match the wedding colors.Sorry about the bd picture I didnt take the pic and it is the only one I have...

They do make the cake server with a sharp edge so you can make just the one piece to serve both purposes if you want.As for handle suggestions if you want a handle that will go with anything just order some synthetic pearl and do the handle from that,it is a very traditional handle material for weddings. If you use a carbon steel just remind them to clean it off after the weding and oil it before putting it up.
Good Luck,
Bruce

Bruce: thanks for the pic, That's part of my design problem- looking at all the department store stuff it's completely hollow handle cast stuff.

440B looks like a good one, I can hot work what I need to to set the bends in the cake server. Which means I have to order some. Or use the cable damascus.

I didnt put any bends in my server,It was only tough on the bottom layer to serve the cake...If you think about it,the server is just that and doesnt have to hold any type of edge so you could find a piece of 304 stainless and make it rom that, you could use it for the knife but just to be safe I would use a carbon stel or stainless...Pizza servers and pie servers also look about the same as a cake server if you want any more ideas..
