Ugh. Sometime studying foreign languages can be humiliating, and my next assignment in Urdu is one of those times. One of these days I'll realize that I speak enough foreign languages and stop this nonsense...

I have to perform this Indian kids song from an old movie in class tomorrow. Its tough because most of the words are palated, which makes Urdu and Hindi difficult for English speakers. Thus, I am singing while working in the shop. That's my studying for tonight! However, I can keep a good rhythm while hand sanding.

Well, it went OK, considering the fact that I sounded like a bumbling old man singing a kid's song.

I heard Urdu is very similar to (or originated from) Turkish language. May be your next foreign language will be Turkish, who knows someday I wont be the only Turkish speaking person in this forum :D.. Good luck with your performance...

They are in the same language family, but are quite different. Both have arabic and persian influences, though, which is the main similarity. Urdu is almost identical to Hindi, save for the writing system. Urdu uses the Nastaleeq arabic script similar to Persian, while Hindi uses devanigari, which comes from sanskrit.

The cool thing about Urdu is that after learning it, you can essentially speak about 5 or 6 languages, including: Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, and Regional dialects in Pakistan/Afghanistan.

My next language will actually be Farsi (Persian). Oh, and I'm also fluent in Spanish.
