I have to say I am over "damascus" blades...

At this point they just seem too busy. I respect blades that are made well but so much damascus these days just seems decorative... and busy. With so many other steels out there that are really good I just, personally, don't see the appeal.

Then again I like the R5 and find the 70's through 90's Vettes ugly. Yeah, I know those Renaults are goofy, and that is why I am appreciative of the fact others like Damascus style blades

Ahh well, glad people enjoy them, and I don't mean to start a debate about the strength of the various types of damascus blades (which has been done in my limited time here a couple of times). Just the visual look of it does not do it for me.

Am I alone?

In your love for the R5? no, but in the minority to be sure. Personally i believe the Datsun 240z to be very high on the best looking crs.

As for damascus im meh about it too because i view knives as tools

I was never into the looks of damascus either. There may be a few times when a particular pattern and how the maker made it would look good to me, but I would only appreciate looking at it temporarily, with no desire to actually purchase it.

Ummm, damascus is and always has been "decorative" claims about any "cutting effect' notwithstanding.

never liked the look from the first time i saw it. too flashy and busy and i also prefer simpler things.

I held off on buying anything in Damascus steel for a couple of years. I viewed multiple picture threads and convinced my self that I needed a nice, expensive stainless Damascus blade. I took the plunge and dropped half a K on a very nice one. It was extremely nice in all respects--beautiful, sharp, and capable. However, it was not for ME and I traded it within a week or so. Like others have said, I prefer simpler things.

I have one Damascus knife. It was my first and last. It sure is purty but not at all practical unless I plan to disembowel someone.

I don't mind a "natural" non patterned damascus on an otherwise no-frills knife. I don't care for the ones with combinations of patterned damascus, highly figured or machined ornate scales, engraved bolsters and scrimshaw. Any of these by itself is ok but more than one and it gets too "busy".

I was never "there" to get "over" it.

I also think much of it is "too busy" both visually and in the hype.

I understand it takes more/different skill to make the damascus, but...so what. Some knives with busy damsacus and busy fossilized handles, coupled with lots of file work, almost hurt the eyes.

Damascus patterns also get old. Some patterns everyone seems to make. Others are unique, but some makers keep putting out the same "unique" patterns it gets just as old. Sure it's signature, but can't they do more...don't they want to do more?

Native Americans are called Indians and lobsters were called bugs. We have a number of things we did not seem too picky about accurately naming related to their origins ;)

I would have to say Grapevines feelings on it are probably closest to mine in reality

My thoughts exactly. I will see one now and again that catches my eye and think I really like it...but then the more I look at it the less I like it.
