It was a freebie with some gear I bought , why not ?

Damascus is for more sophisticated tastes. That is why it appeals to collectors. For those who prefer pure, unadorned functionality, perhaps damascus is not the way to go.

I usually agree with 99% of your posts. I disagree with this post because Damascus is not inherently designed in a manner as to appeal to more sophisticated
tastes. Sophistication is more a product of consumer education and intended use. Damascus is a purely aesthetic feature. Money is scarce. Damascus drives up cost due to its artistry and additional manufacturing procedures. Other practical features, such as tight tolerances or other premium materials, also drive up costs. Sophisticated collectors, especially those who use their knives, sometimes value practical features over aesthetic features. It's not a matter of sophistication.

I love how Damascus looks and value its artistry, but would rather pay more fore additional practical features because I tend to use the living hell out of every knife I own.

I have to say I've never bent into it. But to each their own. May their level of sophistication on form and function guide their way.

Although I am not a big fan, I do have one damascus knife by Jody Muller. I use and abuse it. It's 1095 and L6, holds an excellent edge, it's about 61 RC. Gets a bit of a patina, but it blends in well. I occasionally polish it off. Damsacus, when done right, makes a good steel.

I don't own any damascus and most likely never will.

The only patterns that have ever appealed to me are the feather and starfire...GTC Supersonic with starfire = droooool
