I have to wonder why.....................

 I'm not one that normally questions Bucks decisions and I'm happy that they have finally added another pattern to the Custom Shop offerings, but I do question their choice.

The small 500's are nice little knives but why not the 112 for cryin' out loud? There have been bunches and bunches of potential buyers asking about (and begging for) a CS 112 right here on the forum ever since I joined it, but I don't recall even one asking about a 501 or the smaller ones. Perhaps they wanted to offer a "pocket" knife, but in my opinion a Custom Shop 301 would have been (IMHO) a better choice in that respect. I know there has been a lot of interest in custom versions (with premium steel) of that pattern also.

I know they can produce 112 blades in S30V and mirror polished 420HC, I have one or two of each, so that's not a reason. I think the 112 would have been (IMHO) a better choice and would sell like hot cakes. I know that I would already have an order in for at least one (112 or 301) and probably more. I will probably order a 501 at some point, but then again, maybe not. ;)

While I"m happy to see the 500's on the site, I was surprised as well. I don't see nearly enough talk about the 500's as I do the 112, 300's or even the 55. I would assume others will show up in time. It can't be easy to set up the custom offerings.

They probably had an overstock of parts that had potential to make better profits in the Custom Shoppe.

No sense in just giving them away as web specials.

:eagerness:I would have liked it if they included the 532,gotta get one someday.

............. they don't offer a fixed blade knife - an old one, like the 118 or the 116
or may be an actual knife like the 119 with sterling silver guard an pommel and the handle
made of Steller's sea cow bone? That would be great too. But I definately miss the

Duke ;) :)

Best, Haebbie

Excellent question Plumbedv, I can recall at lest two other threads where people were asking for a 112 Custom shop offering. And IIRC there were a bunch of replies where people chimed in their wishes for such an offering.
Haebbie hit on another great point. Why just the smaller 500's and no 500??? I would love to get a Custom Duke and I bet there are a bunch of others who would as well.

I think given the small scale size of the 500's, Buck is able to reuse end pieces of scale material rather than throw it away. (Reduce Reuse Recycle!)
Remember the 112 web specials a short while ago with the jigged buffalo scale with wood inlays on either side? Well that piece in the middle is exactly what I have left over after rescaling a 110 with it.
I would also prefer to see a 112 CS offering

I'd be all over the Duke myself! It's one of my favorites, even more so than the 112. The 501 and smaller just don't do much for me and I doubt I'll pay the CS price for one.

Well the last time they offered the 112 (short time) only about 70 were ordered......maybe it failed the test!

I asked for a DM bladed 196 Mini Alpha....then they put out the full size Alpha's...go figure. I'm sure the Duke 500 would do better in sales that all three of the others 501, 503, 505. I'd also like to see the 112 as my two CS 112's could use some new freinds. We will just have to wait and see.

Oh well, some thing new is better than nothing!

They have their reasons. We just don't know what they are. Perhaps its some convergence of marketing, ease of production, overflowing parts bin, margins and rock/paper/scissors.

I'm sure they have their reasons. I just see the 112, 500 Duke or the 301 as being a much better seller. But then, they didn't ask me and they must see it different.

I've always longed for a custom Vanguard. I would have to believe that the Vanguard would be a better seller than the Alpha Hunter but maybe I'm wrong. I can hope and dream that someday they will be available for custom order. It is nice to see new offerings though, even if the 501 is the only one of the new bunch that I would order.

I have to assume the smooth buffalo option pricing for the 501 is incorrect. I just don't see how its $90.

The new Custom Shop offerings suprised me too, but it could mean a start of better things to come. Really suprised that neither the 500 nor the 112 was offered. I had to grab a 501 w/ S30V...I'm a sucker for drop points

I thought it was a great idea, I personally don't care for the 300 series at all, or the 112. However I do believe the prices are pretty crazy.
I would imagine it was based off their sales #'s.

I do like the 500 but wish it was proportionate to the rest of the series.

JB's Right, not enough people bought the 112 when it was offered. Buck did offer the 112 & Duke in the Heritage Series. DM

Perhaps that's the reason but I wonder how many CS Alpha Hunters have been sold. That one has been offered for a long time and I don't believe I've ever seen anyone talking about or showning one they've bought. I may have missed it though if someone has.
