I just don't understand

I do not understand how someone can work in my field and not have a knife in their pocket. I work as an automotive technician and I know of one other person that has a knife at my job. I find it kind of hard to believe that you work in this field and not carry one. I use mine everyday, so I guess that those other people have to go look for a blade to use to cut whatever they need, I just grab my knife without looking or thinking twice about it. Maybe it is just how I was brought up. My dad always had a knife and I have carried one since I was 8...except at school, of course. Dad was in the same profession. I never leave the house without a knife, if I have to go somewhere it is not allowed, then it stays in the car. My friends think that I am weird that I have a knife all the time and they make fun of me for be "obsessed" with them. Non-knife sheeple just do not understand! It is not a weapon, it is a tool and a self defense device if need be.

Sounds corny, but basically it's a way of life. Some of us were lucky and learned early on to respect the power of a sharp cutting tool and use them responsibly. I use a knife everyday too, and I get looks at work like I pulled a M-4 Carbine out of my pocket at times.

Yeah, I have been into knives for as long as I can remember, and I always thought it was strange when other guys have absolutely no interest in them. It's such an alien concept to me.

I've come to accept the fact that hardly anyone I know carries a knife, but sometimes I'm still surprised when people of certain proffesions, like yours, don't. Like for instance, a good friend of mine is a young farmer. He comes from a family of farmers, .....and he has NEVER owned or carried any knife, other than what's in his kicthen, and an almost unused box cutter in the bottom of one of his tool boxes! He freaks out if I pull out a little Kershaw Chive to cut open a package with! He starts looking around like I just pulled out a bomb, and he's expecting a swat team to burst in and take me down or something!

Maybe it's just me but hearing a guy say he has no interest in knives or guns is like a guy having no interest in horsepower, tools, beer, or boobs. ....it's just somehow wrong. :p

I have noticed the same thing. I work on commercial fishing boats and almost no one I work with carries a knife, or if they do it's a $3 POS gas station knife. It's amazing.

It was in it's spot right there in the toolbox. ;)

That's okay, but most of them don't even have one in their toolbox, and if they do it is a piece of junk and could barely cut butter.

Best quote ever! Gonna use quote as sig!

Yep, it's an unnatural state of affairs. :D

be happy your profession doesnt have some stupid law against carrying knives

tenders out on the oil rigs and offshore diving facilities are generally no longer allowed to carry a knife (under contract) because of a huge fuss one made a few years ago when he cut his hand and needed stitches.

instead we have a set of safety shears . . . . .

Well, I have obviously an interest in knives, yet very very little interest in guns... It doesn't need to go together.

Man brets, that sucks horribly! On a boat and can't even use a knife! Peas in the Navy on a carrier and the only restriction we had was that it had to folding and could not be longer than four inches.

You have to remember that it's a big wide world out there outside of BF. ;)

Most people aren't knife people, I have known major gun nuts who own hundreds of guns that wouldn't spend more than $30 on a knife.

Have to remember that most knives are bought at places like Wally World and other big box stores, gas stations and flea markets.

Then there are those who just aren't into knives at all, they have kitchen knives and that's it.

Peoples interests and hobbies vary.

A lot of interest or lack there of comes from how a person grows up and who they grow up around, who their friends and family are and what interests they have.

:D :thumbup::thumbup:

I guess I'm kinda lucky. I was born right after WW2 and I grew up with that generation of adults. All of us kids in the south that I knew learned to shoot and how to handle knives by the time we were 5 or 6, even the girls. I've carried at least a pocketknife since I was 5 and a lot of times I have a small FB as well.

Knives are "forbidden" where I work, as part of the blanket "no weapons" rules. That's never stopped me of course; everybody knows my blades are tools, not weapons. Of course, what do people use when they need a box cut down, or a plastic bag opened (something that happens a few dozen times a day)? One of the several box cutters lying around, or the 4" razor bladed utility knives that the store is required to have on hand. My old job (same job, different company) had a pair of 10" chef's knives (one serrated) that were professionally sharpened every 2 weeks (and trust me, they were sharp, even by my standards). And they freaked over my Tasman Salt (which sucks for stabbing).

That's funny, I run into the same stuff....

There are 10" - 12" knives around that people use all the time, but people flip out over a 4" folder....

I'm a retired test lab technician and I always carried a knife in my pocket and an electrician's knife in my toolbox. Heck, the little town I live, our vet carries two or three on him! Of course he's a collector too.

To be honest, I can't say that I or my colleagues (all in a white collar job) really need a knife during the working day. A handful of colleagues have a simple paring knife on a plate to peel the odd apple. That's about it, nobody but me carries a pocket knife.

That is what really gets me!!! And most gun people are like that! That is more perplexing to me than the loads of sheeple that pretend that guns and knives don't exist.

I know that is true! I know people that are gun people too and won't spend money on knives...I just don't understand it! I love guns and knives, but I can somewhat afford knives..have to save for guns. They only gun that I still have, I need to get is my Daisey .22 cal, bolt action with a 13rd clip that is still at my moms in Cali.....yeah I said Daisey, but this is not a gun forum.
I have a bunch of knives, some of them are cheap.. don't know where they came from. I just started really learning about knives being on BF, and now I am really hooked!
My roomate is a Hunter and he does not believe in owning a handgun or carrying knives or guns! Go figure!
