I think that the average man is not drawn to knives like some of us even if we are not collectors. But I agree that someone who needs to use tape, plastic or rubber tubing and such would seem to find a knife a necessary tool.
My son-in-law works on the RR in the maintenance shop and he is never without a knife at work I don't think. On the other hand some of his co-workers are always asking to borrow his knife.
I was a dedicated hunter and fisherman, and a knife was always a necessity. I had them in my truck, rucksack, pockets, and a fixed blade on my belt most of the time.
However, I am not really into knives to the degree many here are. My knives were Case, Camillus, and Bucks. I have a Morseth from the 60s and a Randall plus a Lile, and Ruana. However, to be honest I did not find them overall superior to my two blade Camillus hunter when edge holding and sharpening were considered.
