I just found a needle in a haystack

Never met a knife guy. I'm usually just ridiculed for owning, carrying and liking knives.

Sold a LMF II to a guy on CL once, he was carrying something in A2 and was all stoked to talk knives but with our Jeeps runnin and lights on at 9 pm in a tiny rural town's parking lot I just wanted to get out of there instead of explain a 10 1/2" fixed blade on the hood of a Jeep to the LEOs.

Folks don't seem to mind so much about me owning and carrying knives. Most people around here don't see any reason to pay more than 40 or 50 dollars for a knife. Needless to say, I got some funny reactions when I let people see my knives that costed more than 200 bucks.

I agree. It's one in their line of questions to get you to say you don't use the kids seat belts, shake babies, and stuff like that. It took me by surprise.

If it was conversation related I might understand but, if this was a standard line of questioning I'd like to know why they asked this and what they think gives them the right to.

No offense but, unless this was small talk related this doesn't seem like any of their business imo.

Here in Texas it fun to see what folks are carrying! Down here we see Benchmade folder and tons of Case of Moore maker Large Trappers.

My daughter's pediatrician surprised me. I went to her appointment in an affluent area, and left my knife at home so I wouldn't get any odd looks. I go in, they ask about guns at home (asking if they're locked up) and say they like them and actually did a concealed carry class at the office for the employees.
This perked up my ears at first, until I realized that the doc is a pediatrician...and he does a CCW class at the office. It kind of depends how old the kid is...although a gun in the safe is a nice thing to take comfort in...if you're an idiot.
I tend to think that, as a LIFER for NRA, that teaching gun safety is a much better idea... Combine that with a certain amount of intelligence and a parent should be aware of the excellent training available with the
Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program - NRA
For a while, IIRC, a "previous" president was offering "incentives" to family docs, trying to get them to note which of their patients had guns in the house.... that would bug the hell out of me. Fortunately, the three closest county sheriffs here in central Florida (includes Orlando area) have publicly asked the general public to take controlled carry classes and carry a handgun when out of the house. Cops CANNOT do it all by themselves...
And, BTW, I had a great time working in Moline, ILL and living across the mighty MISS in Davenport, IA. Great folks in that area...

...went to SMKW several times, usually on the way to see Dolly. Bought a nice traditional there, had one of the blades ground specially for me (as a screwdriver) in their basement shop. Of course, after a few yrs of constant use on the job, I managed to lose it out of my pocket...somewhere.
From then on, I carried a knife with a pocket-clip, and haven't lost one since...15 yrs or so...

The only time I ever met people with a similar interest in knives was when I intentionally met up with a couple of fellow forum members at a nearby knife show. It was a good time.

I'm in semi-rural Colorado, so just about everyone is carrying some cutting tool. I met a pastor in a local coffee shop carrying Benchmade and Leatherman in a Skinth. Farriers usually have a nice one hander or small custom fixed blade. Veterinarians seem to favor Spydercos. Most aren't afficionados by any stretch, but once in a while a conversation comes up where like minds meet.

One of the guys at the local tire shop carries a semi-custom karambit, though!

Just an FYI to anyone worried about questions from Docs, very often medical professionals will ask a question not to get that particular answer, but more to see how it is answered. They want to know who do they need to keep an eye on, which kids bruises need a second look, all those things that they are required by law to do, and often asking a question that is "on the list" as it were, to a good doc tells them who they need to be worried about. Simple fact is that despite everyone being safe, lots of kids get shot. Sad but true. So they read that answer, and yeah, I bet they make a call about some folks. I'd bet money that the folks they make a call about, you'd do the same. Their business, maybe, maybe not. When I worked at the oil change shop one of my guys screwed up on calling the cops for a pair that were obviously stoned out of their minds driving with a kid unbuckled in the back seat. Claimed it wasn't our business. Me, I don't care who you are, I'm looking out for kids, don't care what you think of it. Be glad that that office knows guns and is asking with a lot more context in mind.

As for running into folks who know knives, its pretty rare. More often they talk big, and I work with outdoor people, folks who will use a rescue knife sometime in their career, and its shockingly common that they only ever think about the bottle opener (why do so many rescue knives also have a top popper?)

The superintendent on a job were working on is a knife guy, we talked knifes the first time we met for about 30 minutes or so. We both want to get into blade smithing. Kind of gave us a instant bond and a good working relationship.

I have only met a couple people into knives. At least seriously into them. Most of the guys I have met who have claimed to been into knives were flea market people. As in guys who swear anything over $20 is a waste of money and that the best knives are found in a bud K catalog.

Last weekend my wife went to a work colleagues place for drinks and it turns out this woman's husband is a fellow Knut. I had been talking about making new handles for my mora that day so you can imagine my surprise when my wife came home with pictures on her phone of the two this chap had done. They were talking patinas, the whole trip..

This couple lives just down the road from us so I'm sure I'll meet him soon. So weird to come across people who are as obsessed as we are.

I went to one of the many one-off local coffee shops in the area around where I work, had my SOG multi-tool on my belt. The owner of the shop asked me about it so I let him handle it for a bit, then I noticed the distinct clip/handle of a BM940 in his pocket. That spawned a short discussion about knives but nothing much else, we both were in a casual setting and didn't think twice about knives in pockets being unusual.

Most of my knife-related run-ins have come with coworkers, though, I get all my purchases shipped to my workplace which means I often am opening a knife in front of at least one coworker; my department folks are cool, my super is even a collector of custom pens so he understands my hobby pretty nicely. The only thing that really throws people off is the value of some of the knives I get, I've had a couple Fiddleback Forge knives come through my possession while at work; when I showed them off and described how custom they were I've gotten shocked looks and got asked if they were $100. It felt weird admitting I paid over $300 for a knife, even one as custom as a FF knife, most folks just can't comprehend that kind of cost.
