Hey Guys....

Was kicking around the shop here tonight,,ripping apart a stack of old hard drives to get at the magnets and platters..

Made a magnetic thingy for my drill press with the Wicked magnets inside

Somehow one of those little frigging screws found it's way into my coffee cup,, and on my last gulp of luke warm coffee I happened to swallow it... Geez that sucks!! LOL

Anyhoo..
Now that all of my hand tools are magnetized,, how do I demagnetize them ?

Any bright ideas ???

dropping or hitting them is supposed to work. i dont know, though.

Aren't you worried about the screw coming out?

get one of those magnets, tie some string around it, swallow it, and pull the screw back up...unless of course its a 300 series, then you will just have to wait for the inevitable, unless it gets stuck somewhere and you have to go into surgery..hey, ive got some really sharp knives if you need any help.....

I made my own demagnetizer one time, worked OK, was easy, cost about $2.

Bought a small electric fan at a yard sale. It was the shaded pole type, and it had a stack of thin sheets of steel that made up the frame of the motor, with an enclosed coil on one edge. The center armature of the moter was a solid metal. I removed the
guard, fan blade, and center armature.

This leaves a nice circular hole that works for screwdrivers and such. To use, turn it on, insert screwdriver, withdraw slowly, might take a time or two to work. Make sure the coil is not exposed to shorting by your tool.

Theory is the frame sets up a 60 hertz field, as you insert and subsequently remove an object the alternating field weakens or scrambles the set field, as you get a certain distance away the field diminishes, hopefully leaving a somewhat random magnetic domain.

It tended work better with things that had just a weak magnetization.

Hey Guys....

LMAO...

I think I may have one of those demagnetizers somewhere at my other shop,, I'll have to look around and see what I can find....

Luckily it was a small machine screw and not a Drywall screw... LOL

I'll wait a week,, then shoot over to the airport and see if the scanner will pick it up..LOL

Honestly officer,, I swallowed a screw..
