I just realized that I LOVE the garand action in all its' forms.
I have owned Garands, M-1As, many Mini-14s and a BM-59.
I don't know why I messed around with all those other rifles.
When I get home, I'm going to just collect one of each of these beauties.
(No, I didnt forget the Mini-30, AC556K or the M-1 carbine.)

From now on, call me Garandanny

Look up the Garand Guy when you return- if you want a perfect one.

Mine was made in November, 1943. Re-done, re-parked, re-stocked and with a new Criterion barrel.

Danny,
You know that Ruger is making a Mini-14 in the 6.8SPC cartridge?
I don't know about all the specialized cartridges designed to fit the AR-15 style magazine and chamber, but with enough of them it might just survive.

Never knew that.
We go camping every year on the eastern sierras and we'd find funny little pieces of rusted metal all in the same shape over the years. I collected a few over the years as an effort to clean up the wilderness. A few years ago someone pointed out to me that they were the 'en bloc' from the Garand. Don't know how long they've been up ther, but the Marine Mountain Warefare training center is a couple miles away.

I wish garands weren't so stupid expensive these days. As I've gotten older, I'm becoming more sentimental. The garand was at my dad's side in WW2 and I've recently thought it'd be a nice tribute to him to get my hands on one. Not that I'm worth anything as a marksman, but I'd have a piece of history that means something to me and have something to pass along to my boys someday.

I picked up a dec 1942 springfield for 500 bucks last month. It's been restocked but I still found it at a garage sale. You just got to go looking.

I like the Garand family very much.

Some of my fondest memories of shooting were in the Mojave desert, and the Garand used to touch boulders at long yardage. The desert is warm, the rifle is warm, I'm pretty hot myself, and the light clear enough so you could 'walk' your shots to the target at distances not seen in most city ranges.

It was wide open, the Mojave in those days, and the Garand and M1A equal to the task. And it was there with the Mini 14 that I stopped shooting rabbits with a rifle. Too easy. A shooting gallery. Switched to handguns.

Yeah, I like the Garand Clan. Count me in.

I have a 1944 Spfld Garand, and a Spfld Armory Socom 16 M1A variant.
Both Lil-Bit and I really enjoy shooting them both.
The Socom has quite a bark with that short barrel, nice brush gun, though.

No problems that arent my fault. I did stick a case in the chamber, last time I shot it.
A direct result of failure to clean the weapon for about 300 rds or more.
Other than that, not a hitch. Load, pull the trigger, she go boom, repeat, feed her mooooore.

That's pretty clever. It looks like it'd be pretty easy to do an HK-style sight for the M1 as well...if we really thought the Garand needed it.

I went to a local gun show today to pick up a book on 1911s, and maybe a couple of mags. No books, but I did pick up four CMC Shooting Stars. I also saw a few Garands, the most inexpensive being $1500. There was one beauty there sporting beautiful striped walnut, it looked as if it was wearing a new stock. Didn't feel like spending two grand on it though. I definitely will be getting mine through the CMP.

The Garand is everything I expected. Massive and heavy, you just know you are holding an old warhorse in your hands. I still want it despite its weight, or maybe I want one because of it. All I know is that this rifle is all business, and I like that. It was made for tough times and when I get one it'll be comfortable that I have an old veteran by my side.

I saw another rifle that I've been taking a hard look at, the CZ-452 Trainer. I've read good things about CZ rifles, but I've never been able to find one in person. They seem to fly under the radar. There were two models at the show. The problem was that I didn't bring enough cash with me because I had planned to only buy accessories, not firearms. I won't be making that mistake again though. Next time I go to a show I'll be sure to bring a nice chunk of change. At least I remembered to pick up a card though. The person who sold me the Shooting Stars told me that he regularly stocks the rifle and he sells them at a good price. I'll pick one up after the holidays.

Wow thanks for posting the GarandGuy link. Ever since I was a wee lad(lol 10 years ago) I have wanted a Garand. For some reason I thought they would be ridiculously expensive.6-700 for one isnt bad at all. I know they may not be the best condition, but I don't want a safe queen.

Edit: Ok, upon actually looking around, I realized Garands can be had for a lot less than I thought lol.

The M-1 carbine has always been one of my favorite weapons. Lightweight, low recoil, high capacity, accurate, rapid firing, reliable, and hard hitting (with hollowpoint or softnose).
