.30 carbine has approximately the same stopping power as a .357 magnum when expanding ammo is utilized. FMJ ball punches right through, just like a 9 millie. Since surplus ball is cheap, and since expanding ammo is prohibited during wartime, there have been many cases of people surviving multiple hits from a M1 carbine -- in some cases, even succeeding in attacking the shooter in hand-to-hand combat afterwards. That would not occur if you planted a .30 Bee Safe in the center of mass.
Still -- .30 carbine is downright anemic compared to a .308 or .30-06.
Yup, a friend whom was in the 1st SF Group once told me he put 5 rds of .30 Carbine ball in a guy whom went about 3/4 miile down the trail before the bad guy expired.
