I just refuse to schmooze

Mike,

The "show some tit" and "end of the month" quota thing are fantasy to make you feel better about your choices. Police work is not a Burt Reynolds movie.

Take Care,
Jeff

Human nature dictates that showing some tit or schmoozing will work, and I have personall with my own eyes seen it work. Maybe it does not work with you, but it does work, even in the real world.

Every time around the end of the month I see alot more people getting pulled over, and cops sitting by the side of the road. Now, either more people are speeding at the end of the month compared to the beginning and middle, or there is pressure to write some tickets to either account for the shift time or bring in some revenue.

Like I said, I guess you had to be there, but if I had schoozed I would not have gotten that ticket that I "deserved".

There is your answer, you should have showed some tit.:p
I am just curious- what you consider "Schmoozing"?

Schmoozing would be talking about how I just worked a long 12.5 hour shift to support my wife & kids, going on about how sorry I was for getting pulled over, slipping some sports talk in there somewhere, and making sure he knew how much I appreciate the police and donate when they call me on the phone each year.

Instead, I answer exactly what they ask and nothing more, and maintain a neutral tone and attitude.

That's exactly what they want and what you should do. They don't want you blabbering on like a nitwit and making excuses. You should also address LEO's as sir or ma'am out of professional courtesy, if not respect for their job or authority.

What ticket do you think you "deserved"? Your failure to follow the posted speed limit, not having a valid reg, and a prior stop dictated what you deserved and the LEO followed proper procedure in citing you. He would not have been doing his job properly had he let you go with a lesser citation. Those 3 things send up red flags to LEO's as to who may or may not be a responisble driver. You just happened to nail all three at once.

I am always saddened when I click on a thread like this, read the first post, and think "I've GOT to reply to this!", only to find that there are two pages of posts with nearly my exact thoughts.

+1 for nearly every post here - GallowGlass is spot on in my opinion. I hear about corrupt police practices all the time - there are bad workers in every proffession, and they do act outside ethical practices. You could go into a muffler shop, a retail store, any sort of workplace, a little tit or schmooze will help your cause.

Everyone has a story of a bad stop - but they are a tiny fraction of the total traffic stops every day.

Complaining about a speeding violation, or debating the legality of your vehicle's registration after the fact is like debating the need to legalize pot moments after you get caught with a joint in your pocket.

Right on the money. My guess would be that the original poster started this thread with hopes of getting a little sympathy and it didn't quite work out that way.

I like how you try to make this whole thing the cops fault.

You were the idiot.

Don't speed. Don't forget to renew your registration.

When you do speend and break other laws don't expect to be let off all the time. What did you to 2 months ago when you were pulled over? Speeding again?

I think the question now is, how do you schmooze the motor vehicle admin's clerk when she tries to send you to the other line for RENEWING YOUR LICENSE AND REGISTRATION! I've gotten pulled over before for an expired registration, and gotten a warning. I deserved a ticket, but I didn't think that if I would have schmoozed I would've gotten off. I was a damned scared kid that went straight to the MVA to get my registration renewed.

Paying a ticket does not come close to cowboying up.

True, so how about a cup of STFU instead? The coppers have discretion about where they sit and who they cite. If the guy had done something improper or illegal, I'd be all over this, but it's a legit traffic stop, not a Supreme Court case.

Speeding is what got you stopped, the expired registration is what got you the ticket. I don't think going out of your way to be nice would have gotten you off. He was doing his job.

I got my license in 1997, and have been pulled over once in that span of eight years.

It was around midnight and I was at an intersection. The lights were on flashing red, but after midnight there's no traffic and I just rolled through instead of coming to a complete stop.

Appearantly there was a police car somewhere that I didn't see. He followed me for about two miles and then pulled me over, I thought for speeding. I'll admit that I was doing near 80 in a 55.

He asked if I'd been drinking, I said that I hadn't. Gave him my license and registration, he ran it, saw that I was clean and had a perfect record. He then asked if I knew why he stopped me, so I admitted that I was going well over the speed limit. He said no, it was because I rolled through the red light at that intersection. I said "oh, I didn't even reailze that I did that," which was true. He said that it was an easy mistake to make because there was no traffic at all and that I was going "a little fast."

He asked how far I was going, and told me to have a nice night and left. That little exchange left me with some respect for the police around here. He could have given me a ticket, maybe he should have. I was nice to him but didn't go overboard.

In fact, if I were a police officer, I think I'd be more likely to write the ticket to someone who was going out of their way to be overly nice. Going overboard on the niceness to me would say "I'm trying to cover my ass for something I did wrong."

Glad you got pinched.

My cars need to be registered, so do yours Mike. I drive within the posted limits, so must you.

As a retired Chief of Police I can tell you the end of the month crap is just that; crap. We evaluated activity daily, there were no "quotas" and officer discretion on ticket writing was paramount. The end of the month activity carried no more weight than middle of the month, period.....

As for schmoozing, being polite and respectful should be the norm. That's all an officer expects. Schmoozing sounds sexual, that's illegal !!!

Want to avoid tickets like this without any "schmooze" whatsoever?

Register your vehicles and drive within the posted limits. You drive those roads often, you knew better!!!

Oh yeah.

the "show some tit" comment made me laugh!!!

In 29 years of police work I never had a guy show me "tit". Had he I would have had no choice but to let him go. I would have been laughing so hard that I just could not write a ticket. As for women flashing; I can count on one hand the times a woman flashed skin to avoid a ticket. On every occassion except one her actions were evaluated based on her actions and I wrote or did not write based on the totality of the circumstances.

However, 28 years ago I did stop a woman who showed me just a glimpse of spectacular upper thigh and schmoozed me to avoid a 65/55 speed ticket.

it worked, I married her..................................

So instead of her getting a ticket, you got a life sentence. Life is cruel man :D

If a cop gives you the chance to admit that you realize you did something wrong and will be more careful next time, why not take it? Save yourself the cash and the trip to traffic school.

Since we have some cops on board, I'd like to ask a question (I've only been driving for a year and haven't been pulled over). I've heard that if you get pulled over at night, you should put your dome lights on and then keep your hands on the wheel. Others have said that you shouldn't put the lights on, just pull over, keep your hands on the wheel, and wait for the officer. Which do cops really prefer at night? Also, should I get my license and registration out before he asks or not?

Not a cop myself...but I am a scroungy lookin' dude driving a scroungy lookin' truck that's gotten pulled over at zero dark hundred many, many times.

I've had excellent luck with the domelight and keeping my hands on the wheel. It lets them see what you're doing, and as much as anything it's a gesture of courtesy, that seems to help put them at ease. Then I typically say, "hey...I don't want any rude surprises or anything here, but I do have a loaded pistol on the seat beside me..." I've never had a cop that didn't thank me for doing that. Of course having some jumpy rookie start yellin' draw down on me, layin' down on the cold ground etc. provides me with a little extra incentive too....:D

Reaching for your registration and all is in my opinion a distinctly BAD thing. from twenty feet behind, they can't tell for sure if you're getting registration, a .25 acp, trying to conceal a bag of dope, etc. I personally think it's better to wait for them to tell ya'.

We'll wait for the actual lawmen to chime in, but...that's where I've had my best luck.
