I just sold all of them?!?

I can’t recall me being without a knife since I was a kid. Although I have downsized my collection several times for different reasons. I like experimenting to see what other knives or manufacturers have to offer.

Oh, I have no problem choosing a small fixed blade for urban carry if that is what I want to do. I have like 5 or so that I could choose from. Never tried to reduce the herd.

After 34 years of buying and selling knives I have learned that the knives I keep and use are the ones I cherish, and the gift ones..I was into custom auto's at one time and manual ones. After getting them in and out of a safe and oiling them and putting them back I realized that the old Hencles stockman I always carried meant more to me.The customs are gone but my older, used knives are still with me.But everyone is different.

I've never gotten below maybe 7 knives. I don't see myself getting down to 0.

I want to thin the herd, but where to start, where to start? I am thinking of the ones I do not use or have an emotional attachment to, to raise cash to prolong the habit, but also to let some good knives find a good home where they will be used. Also, if buy a new knife, set a goal to sell or trade two others.

The last time I was at ZERO knives was the 2nd weekend of September, 1961. That was when my grandfather gifted me with my first knife, a small single blade peanut along with the admonition - "Now that you've started school, you need your own knife. We can't have you borrowing one all the time."

The next time I'll be a ZERO knives will be - NEVER. I will be buried with a knife or three. In fact, they are already picked out, labeled and sitting in a drawer. My nephew knows where they are. They are duplicates of special knives I have. The actual special knives will be going to my nephew.

I am slowing down in the accumulation of KNIVES - I only bought 43 knives in 2018, including a set of 6 1950s Kabar steak knives. I also bought only 27 swords, sabers and bayonets that filled gaps in my collection of that series of blades. That's the least number of sharp/pointy objects purchased in a calendar year since 1992, the year after I completed my second stint as a "4 part-time jobs" college student.

I gave away 23 knives and sold 64 old folders, so in the end, I did manage a minor horde reduction of 17 knives, or about 0.47% of the current total.

I did that a few years ago to pay for school and my wedding and I have yet to recover lol I really only have one knife to carry and one I use for cleaning fish but i love coming here to read and stare haha. Maybe for my birthday this month I'll get one :D

I should add it's not a decision I regret, I'm glad I had the stuff to sell. Between knives and guns I had a good chunk of change to cover what I needed

Many knives have come and gone for me two. Those I keep I will never sell, and they all get used. I'm fairly happy with the ten+ folders I have.

However, I do try and keep an eye out for new or unique knives, but I'm just so sick frame locks. I own a few, but really would like to see something different.

I try to keep the collection small on the theory that you only really own what you can carry when fleeing the house. I've got a handful that were gifted to me, and so while they may still get used, I won't be going too hard on them. The rest are just stuff. I'm the son of a farmer, so everything that could ever be useful must be kept! But I also know that its all just stuff that slows me down. Always a tension, keeps the hobby enjoyable. At the moment we are Marie Kondo-ing the crap out of the house, but its hard get rid of stuff that gets used, even if only once and a while, knowing what it will cost the next time I want it.
