I know Im a little premature but...

I´ll put another vote for the FRN Delica, I just replaced the one I lost some time ago and I like the new one better.

I very much prefer a full plain edge.

I quite like the look/ sound of a lightweight delicia with spyderedge actually... The lockback should keep it closed nice and tight. Not usually a fan of serrated edges but Im considering it for this one, all of hy other knives are plain edge but this knife would be purely to cut things ASAP in an emergency and the cleanliness of hte cut isnt important, however theres a fair chance that if I had to use it it would be to cut rope/ man made materials so maybe serrations would be better...

I also saw the pro grip with FRN and kraton hadnles but that looks like it might be a little small. Shame about the 3.5 inch limit, the endura would have been nice...

The benchmade 720 (i think the 721 is the one with g10 handles) looks very nice but its a little over my budget (it rings in at about the equivalent of $230 in the uk)

Just in case anyone was interested in the west german knife with the blade that locks open and closed Ive posted a couple of pics at

http://uk.geocities.com/python_tiger_hunter

the big circle aroud the pivot that says ME in the centre is the bit that you push, it moves that whole stud across (its about 3/4 inch diameter) to unlock the blade and then it springs back across to lock it again, same for when you close it. I got this blade probably about 10 yrs ago from a knife shop in Inverness, Scotland. I seem to remember it costing about £40 GBP back then so it wasnt cheap! Steel looks and feels like 440c. The black insert in the handle is hard plastic, not FRN or kraton or anything. The blade is etched with 'ME traveller, solingen stainless, west-germany' There is a very small amount of play in both the vertical and horizontal axis when the blade is open but the lock feels quite strong. The blade is 3 1/8th inches long and the cutting edge is 2 3/4 inches

p.s MelancholyMutt its not illegal to own a lockback knife in england, but you just cant carry it as EDC so i could bring it back no problem i would just have to put it in my 'collection'

You probably want a lockback and therefore you need Spyderco. So here are the lockback Spydies with G-10 and FRN.

Spyderco Lockbacks around $50 dollars.
FRN PE Delica (VG-10)
FRN PE Native (S30V)
FRN PE Native III (VG-10)
FRN PE Endura (VG-10)

Spyderco Lockbacks for more money:
G-10 Police (ATS-55)-Discontinued but still easy to find. I know the steel isn't one of the new "wonder steels" but still better than Aus-6/Aus-8 and other lower end ones.
Chinook (S30V)

For the two people who wanted to know why the Delica/Endura are recommended all the time: Well as you can tell it's not for their looks. :p The reason is they make excellent user knives. They are lightweight, cheap, thin, saberground(better for slicing than hollow ground) and come with one of the greatest steels on the market. As for the company itself. They have excellent quality control, excellent customer service, and they are constantly upgrading their existing product line and constantly making inovations in the market.

"It must be safe, there must be no chance at all of it opening in my pocket if I take a fall. This is by far the most important criteria."

Duct tape?

If you're worried about rust, you might want to look into buying stellite or talonite or whatever Cobolt alloy knife.
In a way, snow can be more insidious than water because you might not realize it's there.
A titanium neck knife would also do the job nicely.

VG10 is VERY corrosion resistant. I've swum (cos I capsized so many times) in the river many times with my Endura non the worse for it.

Also, you may want to consider the Spyderco SPOT in VG10 in plain edge (I've deviated from recommending the SE as it the SPOT has the S-shaped blade) - Spyderco is redesigning the sheath for more tension, and the new sheath should be out in a couple of weeks. You could latch it on to your pack/camelbak strap and put duct tape as a secondary retention system. I don't think you'll need your blade for self-defense so a quick draw wouldn't be important.
