As a young man I have 2 very natural things happening to me at once. 1: wanting high quality items and 2: not having the money to buy them.
I admit my ignorance and my woefully lacking budget, but i need help. I have my EDC blades covered and am quite happy with them. However I need an "Everything knife" a fixed blade knife that is $50 or less, high quality enough that i won't need to replace it, well at least till i give it to my kids (a ways off), with a blade 4-5.5 inches long. any suggestions would be appreciated. As i said i know this gets asked a lot but i would like to hear what you think.
thanks

ps.thanks for all the input and blade ideas, but while shopping aroung i found the SOG Northwest Ranger, any thoughts on that knife?

If you're comfortable doing some work to it in order to thin out the edge a bit, I'd say go with the Cold Steel GI Tanto.

1055 is carbon steel. not even a tad rust resistant.

Last time i checked you could get a Benchmade Rant for about $50. There are several options for blade shape and the alloy is 440C. The good stuff.

If you hang around long enough, you can find a Becker BK-2 on the exchange here for $50 or so. If not, The Gerber Big Rock is a pretty good camp knife. It's steel isn't the best, but its onlyh about $20-25 brand new, and it works really well and is comfy in the hand.

I'd pick the Becker BK2, or one of their upcoming "tweeners."

Or you could get a bunch of Moras. If you're just doing light stuff and need the slicing power, a few cheaper Moras used in succession should last a very long time.

If you look around you can find the Becker BK2 for around $60 new. I will send you a VM telling one place to look.

Oh yeah, Welcome to Blade Forums!

For a tough knife in the $50 range the only knife I could recomend is the Becker BK-2 . Look for a used one on here or the big online auction place . And , welcome to the forums !

The Beckers rock - I love 'em to death but BK2 is above your price point unless you find a used one. *If* you find a used one though for the price you want to pay - snarf it up. It'll still outlast you and your descendents.

Another alternative to a one-knife-to-rule-them-all quest is to drop about $10 on a Mora (realizing that you can't bang on it too much but other than that, it'll do what you need) and pair that with a Cold Steel Trailhawk. With that pair you can do about all you need and still have a couple of bucks left over to start your BK2 savings account. :D

Asking for a do-everything, last-a-lifetime, high-quality, sub-50-dollar knife is really asking for a lot. We all want that. I want mine to have a hand tooled leather sheath, too.

The Becker that members are suggesting is in the ballpark, though.

Save up a few more $$'s and get a Gerber LMF-II ASEK. Otherwise just go with a Ka-bar USMC.

Buck makes several fixed blades that are very nice for the money.

I would seriously look at the KaBar MK1.

It is in your budget, and your size considerations, and is a wonderful 1095cv (coated for rust resistance) FFG blade. The handle is well shaped, and it should last you a very long time.

I would choose it over the short USMC, and the BK2 for just general use, and it should be sturdy enough to do everything within reason (same construction as the full size USMC but with a shorter blade means it is plenty sturdy). It usually runs right around $45-50.

You also might look at the Condor Buslore. Its 4.3in, wood handles, 1075 steel and right around $35.

Good luck :).

Buck 119.
A piece of American history, exactly in your price range, stylish, strong, durable, and can even be found in walmart if you choose to brave the throngs of dim-witted, obese "shoppers."
