I Know, Not Another Platen Question ?

I have some 1/2" stock and was thinking on building at least one platen and buy another. The one I was going to build I was gonna mill it to leave either a 1/16 or a 1/8 lip on bottom for glass. My question is, do I want the platen exactly as close to perfect fit to the glass edges ? I already purchased 2 pieces 2"x8" x 3/16" And the right set up would be the belt lightly running on the glass ? Thanks

I've never had a piece of glass that was exactly the size of my steel platens. I square the bottom of the glass to the support pins and dress the sides with a diamond file with a slight radius. I chamfer the top and bottom front to remove the sharp square edge to eliminate drag. Yes lightly tight you don't want the belt to lose or it will try to bunch up when you apply grinding pressure.
