I know you guys hate this but . . .

My newly acquired Fiskars brush axe is a decent performer. Walmart is carrying them recently for $20. They're a little heavier on the swing than my Tramontina bolo, but the hook blade may work exceptionally well for your purposes.
 
Oh yeah. The Cold Steel ones. I recommend the newer Chinese-made ones out of those. They have more comfortable handles without any flash from the mold, and a more robust blade. They also have a more polished edge. I have the barong, and it does a great job.
 
Thanks for the info and helpful advice. I will look into all of these brands and give one a try.
