Tried something new today, for me at least. After making a simple file pattern on half the spine and tang I put an oversized copper sheet over each side of the handle area and held it on with low temp silver solder. Added a little extra solder to fill the area between the copper and sanded it down to the file pattern. Results look outstanding with the file work filled in with the silver solder which is a very nice contrast with the steel.

That will work, but may require a bit of maintenance (ocasional buffing) to keep it from turning dark.
Another old technique is to use a brazing rod and braze over the whole file work. Then sand/file it away until the steel shows with brass in the voids.
