I like sandals

I like sandals but only "playing and/or working environment" permitting.
Years ago, on board a diving vessel, I've seen a guy wearing flip-flops stepping on a piece anglebar (2" x 2" x 1/4).

Not much to add, medevac by helicopter to the local hospital in Macae' (Brazil)where he was duly stitched.
The best was that, after this happened, nobody really felt discouraged from wearing flip-flops while on deck!
It was quite few years ago and over there PPE and safety procedures were not # 1 on management's priority list.

Big sandal fan here. Chacos normally, but I got two pairs of South African Shakas a while back that are really great. One has an enclosed toe (Called the "Hiker", I think) and works really well at keeping crud out. Go to www.actionafrica.com to find retailers. By the way, Paul Zway, the owner of Action Africa is one of the most honest internet retailers out there. Buy lots of his stuff!
