Well, to start off...From looking at the beckerhead map, and pictures posted by you guys, none of you live in the desert! I just wanted to post a few pics from a short hike today, and to give some of you guys that have never been around New Mexico a picture of what it's like! (Lame)

A little shallow that runs down this small hill, with some sandstone under it.

I've only been in the desert once in my life. The area wasn't a secluded far from man place. It wasn't very natural. It was a few miles outside of palm springs. Thanks for posting this. Gorgeous. I don't see stuff like this very often. It's a nice reminder that places like this exist.

It looks like an absolutely beautiful place! I've never seen a cactus like that before.

Thanks! and you will find some weird little cactus around here :D Ever tried prickly pear? When they are in season you can make some awesome jam with 'em!

While I may have had some when I was younger, I have no recollection of it. My mom tells me they are very good, though. She's was born in southern Texas and would point them out to me whenever we would go to Mexico, though it has been many years. What part of New Mexico were you in for those pictures? I've been to Ft. Defiance, Arizona area and though it was quite beautiful there, as well.

Nice pictures man. i have ate quite a few prickly pears. I spent a while in texas after the army working on large wind turbines, helped out in new mexico for a little while, as well as spent a few months in oklahoma. id pick those locations over any northern state in the quikness. im just not much on heavy snow. its pretty for a second then its cold, its wet, its both then its mud for the rest. having to dig your car out, then protect your parking spot and all is just too much.

Really theres only about 15 or 16 states in north america that i have not seen YET. Florida is my home, even though i live in philly for now. But if i could just pick, id pick colorado and visit florida on holidays!

Hell yeah! I would love to live in Colorado man...and the thing I like about New Mexico is no hurricanes! Haha.

Oh no, you cut the buckyball!! TEOTWAWKI!

(NICE pix! I lived in NM for a bit quite some time ago.)

Desert here. I'm in Tucson AZ. Just not an official Becker head yet. I like the desert its so diverse. If you can deal with 110+ in the summer time.

Mammillarias are a protected plant species. Douchebags like you will ruin it for everyone else when it comes time to start closing down trails and camping areas to preserve the wilderness. Btw, your New Mexico desert is a vacation paradise compared to the Mojave and Sonoran desert regions.

Haha, Don't worry, I ate it. (just kidding!) But I wanted some who haven't been around much cactus to see the inside:P

And M. J. Carp, sorry, didn't see your post awhile ago, haha. I am in Farmington right now, it's in the Four corners area, (Trailbum)

Umm? Sorry bro, didn't know that...They are everywhere around here....And it's not a trail, it is out in the middle of nowhere.

Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. your saying all species are protected? maybe informing him and teaching him this instead of calling him names would be better served. I found information showing several varieties may be endangered in the wild but no general protection for the entire class of mammillarias. now im not an expert but even if your right i doubt that was a proper way to tell him.

I really hate how people get all mean to a person over a computer screen. The same people would normally run from a fist fight.

The genus Mammillaria is one of the largest in the cactus family (Cactaceae), with currently 171 known species and varieties recognized. Several mammillarias are relatively easy (for cacti) to grow from seeds. One such species, popular and widely available from nursery stock but endangered in the wild, is Mammillaria zeilmanniana.
