I love my Vantage

That's about all I have to say. I have a plain Jane 345 with paperstone handles that has really grown on me. It seemed big and heavy to me at first, but now the 340 seems dinky. It is a joy to flip open and close; the thumbhole is fun, too. I can't see this knife ever breaking under normal use... I think I'll take it to the grave.

It bugs me how the Vantage is the Rodney Dangerfield of knives... it gets no respect. It is hardly ever recommended or taken seriously in the General Forum. Yes, it has potential issues, but they can be remedied and you get a hell of a lot for your money. I also get the feeling lots of people own the Vantage, despite their lack of enthusiasm. Maybe it is a simple, good knife that doesn't make one rave.

I'll go make dinner now, maybe I'll use the Vantage, my fave.

The scales on that knife suck. I purchased a knife on the exchange and someone threw their vantage in as a freebie, I can see why. Glad someone likes them. And large? Its an average sized knife at best, light weight IMO... Only thing going for it is the Bos HT and "made in USA".. Otherwise, it's already been junked...

Funny how we can have completely different views about the same knife. ;] gl with taking it to the grave (unless you plan on living only a few more years.)

I currently don't own a Buck and never will again (unless someone slips one to me in a box as a freebie again.).

I've always really liked the knife but the problems with it have kept me away.
OP: How long have you had your Vantages? Long-term use?

sloth357: Words like "large", "average", and "lightweight" are subjective so it's useless to argue about them. Give the OP a break. :)

I know. :) Just lately tired of hearing about how great some knives are that are uhm, sub-standard in my opinion.. So, I should start my own thread on "Knives people like that actually suck.". That might be fun... hrmmm.

Hehe. How about a "wtf is so great about expensive knives?" thread. I love those.

Oh well, I guess you are too good to be posting here :p

I've not had the Vantage for a long time. I don't beat up my knives much. I carry most of 'em, use them to cut stuff, play with them. Sorry, I don't have much "hard use" to brag about. Based on what I know about mechanical things, I don't see much weakness in the Vantage design. Of course, I'm talking about using the knife to cut things, not beating on it or prying with it.

I've heard all the bad things people say about the Vantage. It won't change how I feel about 'em. I have two that are well made, functional and easy to maintain. That's plenty good for me.

Well, the Vantage did very well in the kitchen. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it chopped carrots and diced garlic. Mushrooms were almost as long as the blade, but they gave little trouble. The blade shape turned out to be pretty versatile for various cutting tasks.

I don't know what brand of knife floats your boat, but I can almost bet with certainty that Its 1) not made in the USA, 2) has premium steel, and 3) in the $60-$70 dollar range. The Vantage is all of these things and that makes it a knife that is hard to beat. Unless you can beat these three qualities with your fabulous favorite EDC than go rain on someone else's parade. There isn't anything sub-standard about the Vantage. Maybe you should start another thread SOMEWHERE ELSE.

M,

That guy is not worth taking seriously. He has nothing substantial to offer besides a few taunts.

Come work with me for a couple of days and bring your favorite knife. When done tell me just how your favorite knife out preformed my advantage.
The advantage is closer to a large knive than it is an average at best. The Emerson endeavor is real simular to the advantage. So much so it has a V grind instead of the Emerson grind. The endeavor like most Emerson knives is cut out of 154cm steel. I havent seen what kind of heat treat Emersons blades are treated to. I dont see that 154cm standing up to the s30v. Throw in BOS ht into the mix.
I struggled between the endeavor and advantage. I feel the advantage has the advantage. I can replace mine and break even. Buck's warranty "for now on" helps us work with peace of mind.
I dont like 420hc but it has been known to out preform and survive abuse over high end brand names with premium steels. Yes pauls recipes make a difference. You can buy 5 lower grade advantages to one endeavor. BTW the endeavor is in the hard wear line of Emerson knives. Like the advantage the endeavor has an open spine. I wish the advantage had a stop pin like the Emerson or the csar-t or bravo.
Ive heard time and again complaints about Bucks fit and finish being sloppy and Emerson's being very sharp and tight. Well ive put a few Emersons in my hand over the last 19 months. Ive found that the Emerson hype to be an illusion.
I want a kirby lambert but its been hard to find the knife i want. I have a Chris Reeve sebenza but that knife will not be out in the pasture or the grain elevator with me. No im not worried about it getting wore out or failing. Im worried about losing that $430. Theres a few other knifes I want and plan to own when I find em. The point here is Bucks are plentiful. They are easy to find and easy to replace where the wallet is concerned. Screw for screw Buck uses as good or better materials that the higher end custom and hand made knife companies do.
My advantage pro has a better fit and finish than an Emerson Ive looked at. I can see where the wave would come in handy but the next split second I have my pro open so its not worth $100.
Sub standard? Aight then. Have you ever noticed how many knifes made by so many other knife makers look and function so much a like? Then theres the ones that Buck had out a couple years before the other guys. So I'm thinking your the only one that gets your joke.
Dont get me wrong. I'm not claiming Buck is the Best out there. Im just saying it's the best for me and the best for the buck. Yes pun is intended.

I don't know much about what makes an expensive knife so much better than the average Buck, or SAK. My Buck knives serve my cutting needs just fine. I don't pry, hammer, or hack down small trees with my knives, and I don't do spine whack, etc., tests. All I know is that I own two Vantage Selects (large and small), and both have good fit and finish (no issues at all, and they are 2011 production). They're fine for anything I can imagine using a knife for. In fact since I just lost my third Delica (very frustrating),and I'm going to make the small Vantage Select my EDC.

Ok, First of all the knife is called a Vantage, not an Advantage. Secondly, as you have shown here the Vantage isn't a lower grade knife. Its an American made knife with Premium steel and top end handle materials, under $70 dollars. Vantages have stop Pins, and they run threw a channel but in the blade. Third, The Buck warranty is "Forever" not "For Now On". The only F/F problem the Vantage has had was a blade centering issue, that is easy to rectify. Remember you get what you pay for. In this case with the Vantage you get substantially more than you pay for. The Vantage is not a Sebenza but then again it cost less than 1/4 of the cost of one.

So you come to the Buck sub forum to tell everyone how much you don't like Buck? I have had no issue with any of my Vantages and I enjoy the quality vs price point that it offers.

#1 I know its a vantage. They start at number 340-347 then jump to 845-847 all the ones I've seen any way. I was calling it an advantage to get it out of the title "sub-standard".
#2 Now some vantages are under $70. Some places still sell the 845 pro 100+ depending on where you buy it from. A month ago my wife gave $100 out the door for mine. I haven't found a 847 pro under $125 except online.
#3 I didn't say the vantage didn't have a stop pin. I said I wish it had a stop pin like the endeavor,csar-t, and bravo. I know there's others but that's the ones that is fresh in my mind. The last 2 1/2 years my EDC has been a bravo then a csar-t.
I mean come on. If the vantage didn't have a stop the blade would just flop back and forth. I don't think its a disadvantage but having the stop pin on the edge will add strength to the knife.
#4 here again I know what the warranty is. I don't have as many Bucks has many of you because I'm not that kind of collector. I use my knives. I get the ones I like. But I've been using Buck knives as long or longer than most members here. The company saying is forever warranty. I was just saying it was under warranty for "now on".
Last but not least I know the vantage isn't a sebenza. Like I said mine won't be going into the pasture with me.
I dunno you might have misunderstood my postion on this topic. Its simpley this. Bucks are built as good and some cases better than the high end that are simular. In a lot of cases the materials are just as fine.
As far as F/F goes I didn't say the vantage had any problems. I said I have read people complaining about it. Not one single vantage pro I've held had any issues.

I bought a couple of large Vantage knives and an issue has been plaguing me since I got them. Should I order one in 420HC. :D

Really the ones I received were trouble free. Great looking knives at a good price.

I empathize with your problem and I have a solution......you should get one :)

No worries, I understand your view on the subject. You'd be surprised at the amount of people that get on here and spew nonsense like Sloth357, so just clearing up a few points. It's all good. You should really try buying on line, I would never pay $100 + for any Vantage. They can all be had for considerably less...

I have a simular problem. I was thinking about getting an avid then I seen a black scaled one that looked like carbon fiber. So now that's 2 more I'm buying.

I love how you assert your opinion as truth and of others' as hogwash. This is a great way to live... hrmmm.

No worries. I've bought on line before I dont like to though. My wife bought this vantage. She got tired of me looking at em. I think the knife is worth $100. Especially after holding a few endeavors. My next vantages will be bought off line. I've already found one. I'm just waiting to take some calves to the sell.
