It was indeed very nice here in Houston today. I too just came in from a wonderful fire with family and friends. This summer was BRUTAL. I want to move back to the mountains in the Pacific Northwest....and BAD.
I used my Fallkniven S1 to process the wood for the fire. The wood was all semi-dry red oak (aka iron). I really beat the tar out of it and probably used it about as hard as you can use a knife without destroying it. It did a great job and was much more effective than my hatchet(I guess I need to work on my hatchet technique).
My hatchet was almost just bouncing off of the oak but the S1 just blazed right through it with much more control than the hatchet. I love battoning. I would have no problems taking the S1 on day hikes in the mountains or using it to survive. Great knife.
BTW it was NOT shaving sharp after the beating. It will still whittle wood but will not cut paper very well.
