Curse these forums and their ability to create new problems for me. Do any of you realize how much richer I would be if I hadn't discovered this site?
I'm having such a hard time deciding whether to get the Sage 1 or Sage 2. The carbon fiber is sexy, but the titanium is as well. I've never had a titanium framelock and want to see what the fuss is about.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I have both, and they are both amazing.
The titanium handle feels so sleek, and is very aesthetically pleasing. It's tough, corrosion-proof, and a hair thinner than the Sage 1. Solid lockup with the framelock, and the option to hold the lock in place, while doing tough work. That being said, the opening and closing has a certain 'gritty' feel to it. I emailed spyderco regarding it, and they said that's the washer rubbing against the titanium. Makes sense, but not as smooth as the Sage 1, with it's polished liners. That's really my only qualm about it.
The Sage 1's handles are interesting. The weaved carbon fiber provides some grip, and its pretty easy on the eyes too. As mentioned before, it's ever so slightly thicker than the Sage 2's handles, with the liners and such. The liner lock is also very solid, no play in any direction. But as mentioned before, the Sage 1 opens like butter. The polished liners let the blade glide when opening and when closing. Quite the pleasurable experience, I must say.
The fit and finish on both knives are well above their price. But if I had to have just one, I would probably go with the Sage 1. You can find them around for like 80-90 dollars. For about 30-40 dollars more than a delica, you get so much more knife for your money. The Sage 1 is probably the best deal on a sub 3 inch folder out there right now. The Sage 2 is also worth it, but would be more worthwhile if you could snag it for 140-ish. In my opinion of course.
