I love these ~ What are they made of?

Howdy. New to the forum. I've gotten 4 HI's in the last 10 days. A CR, BAS, WWII, and a cute little Bilton. Instant love. My wife grabbed the BAS when it arrived and swung it at the old wooden bench in my office. I almost fell over laughing. I just handed it to her (which I always do when new arrivals show up), and she turned around and whacked the table. That poor thing never saw it coming, and now there's a CHUNK missing. I didn't even tell her what they're used for, she just knew looking at it. She's never done more than look at one of my knives and go, "Huh, nice". This time she was like, "Now this one I like, can I have it?". I'm still laughing when I think about it.

Sorry about the tangent, but I'm excited about these. I guess I wanted to know a couple things I couldn't decifer from the sticky on the thread

1) Are these all convex edged?
2) What's the steel? My C. Rose is shiny and not sharp at all, and the BAS is obviously a thick and heavy tool steel.
3) Is there somewhere that lists the steels for each model? Are they relatively all the same steels?
4) What makes some shiny/mirrorlike? Buffing?
5) Are they differentially tempered?

1) more or less :)
2) 5160 "recycled" spring steel
3) see above
4) magic stone mirror polishing... i have yet to see another khukuri maker match this polish :D
5) yes they are

heres a nice little link:

Any clue how to get that mirror polish back once a little spotting starts from storage? My C. Rose has a few spots cuz it was in storage for a while before I bought it. I don't want to screw it up. The Rose really seems like a different steel altogether. Different weight, finish, etc. It's a spring steel like the others you say? The others are polished, but the rose is like a mirror, ya know?

each one is done by hand so the polish varies from piece to piece (most of mine are equally shiny :D)
regarding some storage spotting... i would just use a metal polish :)
i use MAAS myself and am very satisfied with the results  after that just coat with a thin layer of mineral oil or the like.

Ever blue the steel like the link explains? I might try that when my wife decides which one I can have.:D

I've blued two of mine. I eventually removed the bluing. It looks good on some things but less so on these IMO.

As for what steel they use, we're still not sure. Many of us are convinced that it's 5160 or something similar for various reasons. I personally believe that what they're using this year is close (but not identical) to what they were using two years ago, and that sometimes other things are used as well. Not everyone agrees with me on this.

Buffing will remove spots. If you're as afraid of buffers as I am, a good aggressive polish will also remove them but it takes more elbow grease. I personally don't bother anymore and let them tarnish, as one good afternoon outdoors with me and it'll never look new again anyway.
