I love you GEC, but why do you hate my pockets?

Pocket protectors or sleeves that fit the knife are the way to go as Smithhammer said. I don't particularily want my GEC's looking like my SAK that is all scratched up. But on the other hand, it's just a knife that is meant to be used. As long as the scales don't get cracked, probably not a big deal. I'm currently looking for a suitable pocket sleeve for a #23 Pioneer. I want to EDC this knife but not bugger it up. How do you feel about SAKs are the little metal thing at the end to attach a key chain or something? They slaughter pockets over time.

Some folks like the edges pretty square. Some like them pretty rounded. When they are square, you can round them. Once they have been rounded, you cannot make them square.

It's impossible to please everyone right out of the box. But, by making them square, it takes just a minute or so to adjust them to be less square, if that's the way you want them.

I fussed with the tang corners and spine edges on last year's forum knife. Took about 5 minutes. No biggie.

Yes it is for a safety chain (you know, never loose your SAK because it could save your life...). If you're not into that, you can file it off with a smooth file and then polish it with the finest sandpaper. Take care with the scales, but mine look really fine while I wasn't overly cautious (done some 20 years ago, scale materials may have changed. Take care...).

Tang corner. I keep my knives vertical in my pocket against a front pocket wallet and the corner of the tang bit me good.

Ouch! Just slid the hand in there and it it slid against that sharp corner. Yeah that could hurt.

I do pocket slip most of my knives. But I do like a bit more "clean" look than the tumble Case does. I would much rather have clean neat, sharp grinds than washed out lines.

I am pretty handy with the sandpaper and strop, so it is a non issue for me.

I don't have any GEC that were so bad I would move them on. I have taken a minute or two with one on the tang. I have not noticed any "pocket wear" from them. But I have scratched my self on a tang or two when reaching into a full pocket.

I'm beginning to like the idea of buffering the sharp edges of my Charlows or using a leather pocket slip sheath (thanks Jon-Slider!!!). I've definitely noticed some GECs are sharper than others when closed. Since the first release, I've been carrying a Charlow in my watch pocket. Now I have holes. I don't really mind the damage because I like my Charlows much more than my watch pockets.

Better watch that pocket or you won't be havin' a Charlow!

I have officially retired my watch pocket from knife carrying duties. For now I dedicate the main front right pocket for single knife carry with nothing else. I'm looking forward to trying out one of jon's leather pocket sheaths as well (I sure know I could use one). I seem to have a bad habit of dropping my favorite keepers and causing minor damage. A leather pocket sheath should hopefully take care of that and the watch-pocket problem that I have.

I actually kind of like the sharp edges on my Charlows. I think it gives them a balanced look and feel to the otherwise smooth surfaces and curved shaped edges. That being said, I think I'm definitely going to have to apply the buffering treatment to at least one of them.

Watch pocket is back on duty thanks to jon_slider!!! I just received a couple very nice leather slip pouch pocket sheaths from jon_slider this afternoon, and they are great. I am using them with my TC Barlows. One fits my single blade clip perfectly and the other my 2 blade spearpoint. I can't thank you enough, jon! I'm going to want one for all my GECs. They are very slim and pocketable, and they will most definitely help me keep my knives in better shape than without them. They look fantastic!

I will take more photos for the 'What makes a good traditional Barlow' thread. For now here are a couple quick shots...

Kind gesture Jon, they look good. I've had to use the same solution with some of my jeans.

I'm currently looking for a suitable pocket sleeve for a #23 Pioneer.

Your knife is 4.5" long, how many blades does it have, and what is the circumference of the knife at the widest point, all the way around. If you mail me your response I may be able to help.

burnside, Im very happy you find the prototype sleeves useful, great to get your sizing feedback.

The ones Im offering as gifts at the moment, are black cowhide with black stich, and look like this:

I still need to confirm fit, but am hopeful they will work with a single blade Charlow, and I am also offering one with red stich that is 1/2" larger circumference, that should fit the 2 blade Charlows.. Anyone wanting one, feel free to email, let me know how many blades your Charlow has. Im hoping to have this batch of black sleeves in hand tomorrow, and ready to mail this week.
