Yeah , yeah , I know , short trip !

Not only do I score Zombie bait on the Zombie test I find out I am a wimp to boot !
Am I the only person on the planet who can,t work the lever action on a winchester with one hand ? I mean like even Arnold can do it ! I just saw another boy do it although his butt stock was sawn off . Is there a technique to this or should I just buy a box to hide my head in shame ?

Dunno that there's a technique, better save up fer a box.:p ;) :D

Kevin sometimes getting the lever past the first little bit can be a little problem and especially if the gun hasn't been worked for a while.:(
Work it over good by lots of levering and maybe oil it a little, should help a bit anyway.:D

Oh. and Marlins are easier to manipulate.:p ;) :D

I happen to have a Marlin !
I,m just wondering if I should pad the inside of the box I hide my head in or if that is just another sign of my wimpiness ! L:O:L

I,ll only use light rounds ! L:O:L I don,t have any plans to need to do this in the near future . If Arnie can do it , anyone can do it ! Hes just an actor ! L:O:L

Do they still sell those lever actions in the John Wayne model with the oversized loop? I always thought spin cocking a lever action looked cool.

Yeah, and if you shoot a hole in your armpit that'd be pretty cool too.:p ;)

Wasn't that rifle featured on The Rifleman with Chuck Conners? Been a long time and with my memory well.:o

Kevin, first thing to do is slow down. Levers like positive, assertive movements. Practise until it works out.

Thanks Munk , I think I,ll do what you and Yvsas said . As for the mitten size lever hole ? John Wayne had it in several movies including True Grit ..

Shooting a hole in my armpit would be embarrassing and hard to explain . I,m definitely not going to practice with rounds in it . Its just in case of zombie attack and I have special rounds that only kill zombies . Anyway thats what the guy told me when he sold me the rounds . They are called dum-dums ? He wouldn,t lie to me would he ?

It's easy to learn, but just like learning to ride a bicycle, don't expect to do it without getting scabbed knees. i still have a scar on my upper arm where I caught the front sight of my old Winchester. Also, you do have a big loop lever right? A wrangler lever? You need one to spin the gun. If you don’t, just throwing the gun forward and pulling it up with a standard lever works, but I wouldn't advise doing it too often, as it is hard on the gun and hard on the hand.

Yes it was Yvsa, his was specially modified so he could shoot it quicker, it had a long bolt attached to the lever so he could rapid fire it without touching the trigger.

Must have large loop...

Tried to spin marlin 45-70 without large loop...

Almost broke several fingers...:(

Bought Win 44 with large loop...:D

Spun it with live ammo, to make sure it would feed...:o

Spun one at a gun shop once, tore hole in shirt from front sight...

Don't spin with ammo!

use snap caps!!

Tom

;)

I have seen it done with the regular loop . As its been pointed out the rifle can be modifed and loosened up .

As for using snap caps ? No problem I,ve been shooting blanks for years ! L:O:L

Hi Kevin:

Maybe you should try twirling a cocked single action, too.

Just kidding.

I do not doubt your experience, but from my own limited experience, it seems that it would take a person with really small hands or really thin fingers to get the rather narrow loop of most lever actions to spin around their hand. Maybe we are talking about different techniques, and I concede that even a person with normal size hands could spin a lever gun with a regular loop, if they left their pinky out of the loop – though my fingers are too big to do it even then, but spinning a 6 - 7lb lever action on two fingers isn't going to feel good, and you are not going to have the control as if you were to do it with your whole hand. Two fingers just don't have the strength to get the job done. In my opinion, if you want to do it like John Wayne, you need a big loop.

Bullfrog , you won,t find smaller hands on any man . I,m six foot two and have literally never seen smaller hands on any adult male and only one woman . Its great for working on small electronics ! The technique I saw with the small loop was not a spin so much as a flip forward and back technique . Kinda like a reverse hand YO_YO . I actually find my hand flops around a bit in even the regular sized loop .
I think I,ll take up knitting ! L:O:L

Don't keep the needles in the same box you put your head in. ;)
You're liable to put an eye out.:D

Don't feel too bad. I'm 6'4" with big arms, big wrists big palms and short fingers. Makes for an odd looking paw I can tell you...

I too have done the flip forward, pull back levering with my marlin, though it isn't a comfortable procedure. I think John Wayne even did it near the end of Rio Bravo... or maybe it was El Dorado - the one where his side was numb because he was shot in the back years earlier - it might be the latter. I can't remember if his sidekick for that movie was called Colorado or Mississippi. Oh well, both are good movies at any rate.

That would have been El Dorado.
James Caan as Mississipi, Alain Padillion Trahern, or somethin' like that.
The hangover cure in that was hillarious.
