Just got my first firesteels from kiahs today, so I figured why not make a fire! :)

I shaved up some fatwood on the back of a stoneware dinner plate (very fine curls) with my mora, nested them together and tried sparking them with the spine of the mora...nothing! I scraped some more of the oxide off...nothing much but pretty weak sparks. Then I remember reading about how the sawblade on a vic farmer or a multi-tool (enter my LM Surge) can make bigger and better sparks. Man, did it ever! Three strikes and the whole pile went up! :D

Thanks to all of you, I got my first firesteel/fatwood fire in less than 5 minutes start to finish! Reading here sure does take some of the learning curve out of it...Thanks again guys! -Matt-

P.S. Next time I'll remember to have the camera handy- sorry for not having any pics, but I'm sure you all know what a fire looks like! :p

Congrats! It's a pretty cool feeling to be able to make fire with just a spark.

Two things I learned here that helped me tremendously: scrape slower rather than faster and hold the striker stationary and move the firesteel.

thats good, i need to get one of those firesteels myself.

I'm thinking of one of the swedish firesteels.

You probably need to square off the spine of your Mora. Take a file to it, and it will throw nice sparks.

Great information !!! Thanks for the link, I really need to get one.

No problem,

If you do buy one, please purchase from Get'N'Out Survival. I'm not connected to them except that he sent me the firesteel, but I'd like to make sure that since he volunteered it, he's fairly rewarded.

I'll definitely try those tips next time I practice with the firesteel and see how they work for me!

I'll do that! I'll probably use some silicon carbide sheets backed with Micarta for my file...I make fewer mistakes the slower I work! :D

Thanks for the tips guys! -Matt-
